This country was built off the sweat of slave labor. The least that we can do as a civilized society, no matter who had slaves or didn't have slaves, is to give blacks equality in employment and in education.

Further, I say we trace who had the slaves back then and those people who are still wealthy should pay up what they owe. The Germans should be made to do the same with the Jews. The Swiss should be held accountable for all the monies that they stole from the Germans and the Jews.

Lastly, bashers should be required to read all 644 of my story and poem posts and give me a 5 vote.

There, I feel better getting all that off my chest. It makes me proud being a Jewish black man. Sammy Davis, Jr. move over.

There we must respectfully disagree. I hold each man accountable only for his own deeds, not those of his family. My father was a Stalinist, and I'd rather not have to pay for his crimes against my fellow Germans.

Freddie, there are reparations, then there is outright torture! Can't they just give you 5 votes without reading your stories (they didn't when they gave you the 1 bombs either!) JUST KIDDING - I don't want to upset a jewish, black lesbiman...

...Now, as far as too many African Americans, they still do not receive the same opportunities as does a white man. We should pay to send every African American who can trace his ancestors back to slavery to college for free, and not some community college, a real college, like Howard University or Temple or UMass.

Moreover, every black family should be given a coupon for a new car of their choice, within reason, no Cadillac Escalades or Lincoln Navigators (lol).

When I saw the first appearance of this thread, I was willing to give odds that the topic of reparations was going to arise.

As has already been pointed out, from both ethical and practical points of view, reparations cannot be justified.

Beyond those points of view, a fair argument can be made that massive reparations have already been constructively paid and continue. The citizenry faces the daunting spectre of their continuance until such time as the bankruptcy of the U.S. becomes apparent to everyone save the small minority who are already cognizant of the fact.

Well, thank you for recognizing me as such, Jewish, black, and lesbiman.

Yes, okay, you've twisted my arm. Sure, they can just give me the 5 vote. I mean, I don't want to be a hard ass about it.

Damn it! I hate it when I'm so predictable.

I figure that if they can bail out all of these fat, rich, old white guys, they can surely throw a few coins to the black people of America.

If you haven't already, you should take a tour of an inner city black school. It's nothing like a white school. They don't even have new books. They have to share books. The worse offender is Washington DC. I"m ashamed of my government in their treatment of black Americans.

Today, in buildings at Brown and Princeton bearing my family name, young people are being taught that I should be impoverished for the sins of eight (8) of my sixty-four (64) great-great-great grandparents.

You need to check your facts.

#1. The colonial records for several states reveal that black males and white Irish indentured servant girls were making most of the bi-racial children, not to mention the Creoles of Lousiana or the Creoles of Spanish Florida.

The average planter-class aristocrat went to New Orleans or New York to fuck good looking black women, usually quadroons or octaroons who looked more like Mariah Carey than Sapphire the cotton-picker.

In fact, if you examine the old newspapers you'll see references to white Southern women eloping with black slaves.

#2. Slaves cost a lot of money to buy. A $300-$1000 slave in 1850 was worth tens of thousands of dollars today. If you hurt them you lost their labor and maybe your investment. Slave abuse was not prudent. Slave discipline was pretty benign: Generally speaking, if you fucked up you got what amounted to time-out, that is, you didnt get to visit friends on other plantations or attend frolics. Maybe you had to do extra work while others had leisure time. If you were violent you were whipped but did no jail time (spouse/child abuse, battery, animal abuse, arson, criminal mischief offenses). If you were a constant problem you were sold or sent to remote plantations. If you murdered you were hanged.

William Johnson, a black planter of Ntchez Mississppi, owned many slaves and had white employees. His constant complaint was how much slaves ate and how little they worked. According to his diary most of Natchez owed him money and he was welcome just about everywhere in town. He, too, went to New Orleans for sex.

One of my black friends gave me a copy of her geneaogy. Her family owned slaves! here in Florida. And the old newspapers mention freed black parents selling their children into slavery.

So biblical!

I was counting on somebody 'round these parts to be clever enough to catch the Biblical allusion— you never disappoint me, Stella.

And me an atheist, too. :p

I suspect it's just that I was the first person to drop in after your post.

Well, I tend to agree with the sentiment of the students. Anyone named Princeton Brown or is it Brown Princetown, should pay.

Huh? You're point?

Had it not been for mating the biggest slaves to get the biggest workers, we wouldn't have black giants in professional basketball and baseball.

I think my point is move valid than your point. I am biased though.

FREDDIE

My point is: I did my homework and you didnt.

THIS is Stella's problem with me; she doesnt do her homework and looks like an idiot when she tries to argue. Ditto for RUM DUM. If either of them could kick my ass, trust me...they'd be first in line to do it.

I see you're point now. All that homework you did on behalf of black people must have taken you considerable time. On behalf of black people everywhere, I'd like to commend you for explaining how wonderful life was for their people back then.

"Okay, Tyrone, Leroy, and Jackson, he's all yours. Don't kill him, just hurt him a little bit. Once he begins to suffer, he'll understand how your ancestors suffered."

So, JBJ, do you still think that black slaves were living well back then.

"Hold on, Tyrone, remove your foot from his mouth so that he can answer my question. Gees, are those all your teeth on the ground? That's disgusting. Maybe, you should get some water. No! Leroy, not boiling hot water...too late. Shit, I think you knocked him out when you hit him with the bucket. It's just as well, he won't feel the third degree burns until he regains consciousness. What do you guys wanna do now? Wanna play so B ball or do a drive-by in a rich, white neighborhood?"

And are you saying that America was the only country to have slaves? Also where did the first slave ship come from?

by no means am I saying slavery was right but I want to get your full view on this......

389 years ago the first slave ship landed in the American colonies.

354 years ago John Castor became the first legally recognized slave, ruled "Property for Life" by Virginia courts.

Read the rest here.

I want a poster of this. :)

What amazes me is how much of that history I have lived through in my life time ans seen the changes happen. Could there be a day when we no longer look at the color of a person skin, but the person inside?

Yeah, that is soooo true. Russia, China, Europe…and today we have a big slave trade issue with parts of Asia and Latin America. In Florida there are homes being busted where the women from South America are forced into being prostitutes. That is one reason why I think the US can take a lesson from learning how Canada handles foreign labor…I just don’t understand how one human can do something so cruel to another human being…..

I wasn't assigning blame with this thread. I realize that the entire world has had to battle slavery. I was only sharing what I thought was a nice reminder of how this particular country has grown up - finally. :)

BFW

Were they living well?

Let's start at the beginning. Africans werent at holiday on the beach when the Arabs and Europeans showed up and took slaves to the New World and Arabia. The people who became slaves were freshly conquered by their African neighbors or a problem in search of a solution, viz., they were criminals. In either case they were surplus bodies with few friends. So the people who became slaves in America got to live, which has some subjective benefits.

This may surprise you, but the Boers were in South Africa before the Africans moved into the area.

Come hell or high water their masters had to feed, clothe, shelter, and treat their illnesses. Everyone else in America was on their own. Slaves lived as well or better than soldiers who existed under a similar peonage....and still do.

I can't support anyone that would "own" another human...i know that some dream about it but that is the bdsm world....i think all human's deserve personal choice and freedom.

I dont advocate owning people, but I do believe its a bit late to be locking the barn after the horse got out. Slavery in America ended in 1865, almost 145 years ago.

Look at it another way, when slavery ended planters no longer had to care for non-workers, children, elderly, etc. They paid the person who picked the cotton. Think about that for a moment, before emancipation Massa fed and clothed and sheltered your family; after emancipation Massa paid you to pick cotton and the family got zip.
