Reading this reminded me of going to church as a kid and seeing the "picture" of Jesus on the wall.

Documentary Questions Image of Jesus
Program Asks Why Many Think Jesus Was White

.c The Associated Press

LONDON (March 28) - Was Jesus dark-skinned? Was he actually born in a cave?

``Jesus: The Complete Story,'' a new documentary television series co-produced by the British Broadcasting Corp., considers these questions in its attempt at a purely scientific investigation into the Messiah of Christendom.

``The combination of new scientific and archaeological discoveries with a reevaluation of the historicity of the Gospels has allowed us to tell the story of Jesus in a fresh and exciting way,'' co-producer Michael Wakelin said of the three-part series, to begin broadcast April 1.

The documentary is to be broadcast in the United States in its entirety on April 15 on The Discovery Channel, which co-produced it.

For the series, a computer-generated image has been created to suggest what Jesus' face might have looked like, contrary to the fair-skinned and fine-featured image familiar since medieval times.

The new image was created by a forensic artist at the University of Manchester using the 2,000-year-old skull of a Jewish man from Israel. Cues on hair and skin tone were taken from frescoes of Jewish faces painted in the third century.

The result is a dark-skinned, curly-haired man with a round, robust face and a stout nose.

The idea of a darker Jesus is becoming more accepted by Catholics - a dark-skinned Jesus was selected in 1999 for a special millennium-edition of the American independent newsweekly, the National Catholic Reporter.

The series goes beyond the skin-tone question, challenging another widely accepted image of Jesus - his birth in a wooden stable. The program argues he was more likely born in a cave.

It also questions whether Judas betrayed Jesus to the Roman authorities, suggesting that a mistranslation could mask that fact that Jesus worked with Judas to provoke his own arrest.

Using diverse historical accounts the documentary weaves a tale of how a young carpenter may have been inspired to lead a pacifist rebellion against the establishment in Jerusalem, launching a religion now embraced by 2 billion people.

I've seen adverts for that and it looks pretty interesting....Todd will probably shit a brick though.

Ok...ok, lets just say that far right christian fundermentalists are gonna hate this show.....I think

No, Todd shits long, hard metal things put into him by the Government's Secret Agencies for testing.

I don't care what religion anyone might adhere to.....

or if they believe in Jesus Christ, just Jesus, the Christian God, or any other such religious entity of any kind......

and if they do believe that, "some sort of a guy named Jesus - did exist," and - "if they believe he was white,"

then they are idiotic fools.

Noboby in their right mind could believe Jesus was white - nobody sane.

There are those who have trouble with the idea that Jesus was Jewish. Now they'll have another bone to chew.

All of the paintings and movies of white Jesus over the centuries are a direct result of superb marketing.

Hey why let a little thing like the truth get in the way of conning people into a religeon.

I guess its all been part of my coming to terms with Christianity, but I've read extensively about the topic of the historic Jesus. If I owned a television this is definitely a show I'd love to watch.

FYI, a wonderful book about Jesus, written by a Jewish Buddhist name Stephen Mitchell is entitled The Gospel According to Jesus which is founded on research done by the Jesus Seminar. That group uses textual analysis of biblical and contemporary sources as well as discoveries of archaeology to address questions about the historical Jesus. Many of the scholar associated with the Seminar have produced books on the subject over the last decade.

The picture of Jesus that is most convincing to me is of a Jewish teacher whose ideas are not that different from those of the Buddha and other great spiritual teachers. Understanding the political forces at play within the nascent Christian Church helps to explain much about questionable doctrines which underpin the present Catholic Church, ideas like the fall and redemption, which necessitated the fantasy of Jesus crucifixion and resurrection, neither of which are supported by contemporary documents.

I'll stop now before I piss everyone off. ;) I close by saying this is surely a fascinating subject for anyone interested in history. Thanks WriterDom for calling it to our attention.

Wait till they get the part where "Works with his hands" was mistranslated as "Carpenter". Man, all those little cartoon pics ofa white Jesus making bookcases in Children's Bibles all over the country will have to be recalled.

The practice of illuminating manuscripts was begun with monks around the Vatican and spread across the European continent. Jesus was initally drawn to resemble an Italian, probably the pope knowing catholics. The manuscripts were drawn more for the people and less for historical accuracy, and the people want their God to look just like they do, which is a handsome blue eyed white guy. Americans have been the most noticeably racist because we have the most noticeable number of different races all hanging out trying to whack each other with pogo sticks. Americans who've run the bible making industry since they started the Moody and/or Zondervan Press have always preferred their God to look like a handsome blonde haired, blue eyed, Quarterback. Not only can he turn water to wine, but he can win one for the Gipper! This isn't news. Most of us figured out that Jesus was a less the gorgeous Jew who was probably short and had calluses on his hands and feet. I doubt he knows how to play football and probably isn't any good at it.

Um...

That isn't where they got the carpenter thing from. Some could of, but his father...his earthly father...or you could call him his step-father, anyways...JOSEPH was a carpenter. And in those days the children took over the business. There is a reference to him being a carpenter during the time he was around forty....or so...I just can't place it. :) Just a bit of a lesson to ya.
and Jesus wouldn't be good at football, he would be perfect. He was perfect. That is if you believe that he was the son of God. Eh, this age old dispute will never die.

Though I do agree he was dark skinned. Probably medium....he thought it would please all races...ya know bein medium, but no......we are never happy. That last part, or this paragraph, was purely based on my take on things and not any documents.

The Joseph was a carpenter thing is the original source of the mistranslation. I don't believe the Catholic Church today would argue very strongly for the validity of Christ's earthly carpenter vocation.
