Johnathan Drew stared at his reflection, as he reached for a razor. Two weeks ago he'd turned fifty and wasn't taking it well. It was time for his beard to go, Originally he thought it hide his age, covering the fine lines that had grown around his face. Now, peppered with grey and and more than a few years out of style it only served to remind him of how old he was and he didn't need anymore reminders. His secretary had thrown him a birthday party at the office and it was one of the most painfully experiences in his life. For the first time he realized that the majority of his coworkers were less than half his age, nothing more than kids next to bomb. Now he was ready to turn over a new leaf.
With a few deft strokes the beard was gone revealing a face he hadn't seen in years. He eyed his face carefully, studying it from every angle. John smiled in contentment, despite a few wrinkles here and there he was no worse for wear. Johnathan's square jaw was still there and his chin still jutted out perfectly. Even his eyes seemed a little greener, no longer overshadowed by the full beard. He stepped back a few feet looking at his full frame. He was still tall 6'4" and his two mile a day run had kept him down to a lean 180lbs. He considered himself much better looking than the old fat bastards he worked with.
Still he couldn't shake the feeling that his better days were behind him, of course his living conditions didn't help. After his kids left for college he and his wife decided to sell the house and buy a small apartment. Putting the money into their savings and freeing themselves from the responsibility of a big house. Unfortunately his apartment complex was filled with University kids and young couples. Johnathan couldn't walk out his door without being reminded of how old and out of touch he was. The women were especially torturous. Their young firm bodies and youthful looks put his wife to shame. She was a dear and quite loving but could have taken better care of herself over the years, maybe join a gym.
Age did have his perks, he drove a Porsche and his clothes were fine and expensive. Money was no problem for him always having cash and credit. He and his wife would often dine out, choosing only the most expensive restaurants. As he pulled his clothes on, a blue button down shirt and black slacks, and headed out the door he couldn't help but wonder what a successful older gentleman like himself would be missing in his life.
