Alistair was in a great mood as he left the whore's shack with a shirt and skirt in hand for his cabin girl. He drove a hard bargain concerning what else he got for the coin he gave her, and while she objected mightily toward the end, he got his money's worth from her. She'd also remember that he was a man of his word, willing and able to deliver on everything he promised.
"Next time, I might be tryin' that with her again. And if it feels as good again, then Anna will be learning something new to keep her Captain happy."
He returned to the inn, heading for the stairs. But the way the voices dropped in the room told him clearly that something happened that he was not going to like hearing about. He continued up the stairs, the spring in his step gone, and a tension started to fill him that he was not wanting.
He opened the door, seeing Anna sitting on the floor, curled up again with a blanket wrapped around her.
"Now, why would me darlin little cabin girl be doin all hunched up like that? While in this room, me lass, you'll not drape anythin' about that delight of a body. I be wantin' to enjoy lookin at ya. A pretty lass like ya should be showing herself off to her Captain whenever they be together alone. Or at any other time he be tellin her to show herself."
He took a few steps over to stand before her. He dropped down, looking at her carefully. While he was a rough man, mean spirited and harsh, he did truly care for everyone who he considered his crew. Without them, he was nothing, and he needed them at their best. He managed to be a good judge of character and ability, and in the short time he had been with the young woman, he was capable of telling when things were definitely not right.
"What happened, Anna? Tell me. You're a part of me crew now, and no one does anything to me crew but me." His voice was showing true concern. "Tell me if anything has happened, and I'll deal with it."
