Actually, he volunteered to go to Vietnam, but the Army had a different assignment for him - they wanted him to teach literature at West Point, of all places. He decided that wasn't for him, and left the Army. He was a captain and a Ranger by that point. He had an honorable military career and nothing to be ashamed of.
