"Many Literotica readers (and authors) shared with us that they visit the site on their phones and would prefer not to have NSFWs images on the screen while someone else is looking over their shoulder. Other members told us there are so many sites on the internet with photos and videos that they would prefer Literotica remain a haven for text - the original intent when the site was launched more than a quarter century ago."
That's the official explanation from Manu. No one on Lit seems to be taking it seriously, and there is a whole 20 page thread where Litsters have said so.
Your explanation makes far more sense, and the consensus seems to be that it's the main reason for the change. Plus, images take up lots of server space, and there are issues around copyright and consent ("pics of my wife" crap).
It doesn't really affect or bother me. I just can't see a good reason why Admin weren't open about the real issue. So I hope you don't mind me poking gentle fun at it here - and in the spirit of Lit's literary pretensions bolting an unnecessary Conrad quote on the end.
Thing is, any site that allows user content of an adult nature will deal with questions about consent and copyright, and there are ways to deal with those things without just nuking the whole premise of pics and gifs.
But it's also true that a collage of state laws written by the biggest fucking hypocrites you can imagine are almost surely responsible for this. Fucking creeps who will pay for an escort or mistress's abortion and threaten them into NDAs, but are very concerned about boobs on the internet.
