A Song for Everything

I love the Beach Boys early instrumental stuff. I love the sound of those Stratocasters with the reverb, and the attitude and tempo. So fun!!!

Oh, to be young again!

The Beach Boys - Surf Jam
More surfin'
I love surf music. And I loved surfing. It is also why I got kicked out of UCSC. This song hits that on the head.

"I wanna go surfing/ Oh, mama /I don't care about nothing..." That included morning classes...

Yes, more surfing!

The incomparable Mike Campbell can play him some surf guitar

Serfing, dewd

Deep background: This performance by TPH is a cover of the Ventures version of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." But their version is based on the original work of music, which was written by Richard Rodgers as a ballet piece in the Broadway musical "On Your Toes," from 1936. Choreography by George Balanchine! There was also a 1957 film called "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" which used the same Rodgers music. According to Wikipedia, the Ventures were covering the ballet arrangement, not the the movie soundtrack arrangement. So we've got Petty covering the Ventures covering a 1936 Broadway musical.

There's also a Mick Ronson album by the same name, inspired by his childhood remembrance of the same music. Remember Mick Ronson, guitar player in the Spiders From Mars?

My community band, which is filled with brass and reeds, performed this song earlier this year. When we first started playing it, I sent the director the Petty recording, and she was not impressed. Her arrangement was nothing like the surf rock version, though you can hear threads of the common melody in both. It was the Rodgers music from "On Your Toes."

Welp, that's all I know about "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue." Aren't you glad you asked?

Stiill surf music.

Been watching you all ride the waves and decided to finally jump in with a more modern nod to "Beach Rats."

I don't dare switch the subject...keep on surfin'.
This one is a little specific. Surfing is energy, and frantic, and sometimes fear. But there is a point...

I was surfing Mavericks after a storm. Mavericks is big waves. BIG WAVES. I had no business being out there on a borrowed stick. None at all. But there was this girl... And when I got dared, in front of Kelly, and she was going? No business at all, but there I was, paddling out into some of the most amazing curls I had ever seen. Movie big waves. And I was in the line up, then paddling. Paddling hard. Timing is everything in surfing, and I still wasn't getting it down right, but this time, on accident, it was perfect. I slid down a wall of water, and the wave curled over me. For the first (and one of the only times) I was in the tube. And everything went away, all the fear, all the noise, and it sounded like the first 20 seconds of this song.

Gotta be surfing.
