Advice needed: How to be a good friend to a friend in need

I think concern and love without pity is the way to go. "How are you doing?" said without the overly whiny accent on the "doooooooooing"? (Not that you, K, asskicker, is prone to such whininess. Well, often, or in public. ;) )

Also, I'd say "I'm really sorry you got such shitty news." Maybe offer yourself up as an excuse for some distraction. Maybe "you know, if it were me, I'd probably welcome the chance to go to a shooting range and blow things up to let off aggression. Want to do that next weekend?"

I know you'll do fine. You're a good friend.

Umm, give her a heads up about whats going on in your head, for understanding purposes, but don't go on with it.

As to talking about her problems, follow her lead. Some love to talk about it, others hate it.

Overall, just be a good friend, play the games she wants to play.

And when things are getting bad, make sure you call ahead of time to fit into her schedule. Cause when you just want to be with family, and people keep interrupting, its not cool.

Wise words. Thanks. As for family, right now her husband is out of town for awhile, hence why this is a good time for visiting. But duly noted - that makes a ton of sense.

It looks like tomorrow's the day (well, the first day) - I'll check back in and let everyone know how it went.

Thanks again gang! :rose:

Got together with my friend tonight. There is a monthly outdoor street market that's held in town and we met up beforehand, then strolled. As more than one person suggested, I decided to follow her cues and she seemed as if she just wanted to have a good time.

So that's what we did.

It was great. Totally not awkward. We were just two friends having lots of laughs. (I did some funny dancing, which she appreciated :D)

Maybe things will change but I'll let her decide how much she wants to talk or not talk about things. And if I break down at some point, well, surprise, I'm human.

Millions of thanks everyone for your words of advice, sympathy and support. I felt like a good friend tonight and there really is no better feeling. :rose::rose:
