I think concern and love without pity is the way to go. "How are you doing?" said without the overly whiny accent on the "doooooooooing"? (Not that you, K, asskicker, is prone to such whininess. Well, often, or in public.
)
Also, I'd say "I'm really sorry you got such shitty news." Maybe offer yourself up as an excuse for some distraction. Maybe "you know, if it were me, I'd probably welcome the chance to go to a shooting range and blow things up to let off aggression. Want to do that next weekend?"
