Saving... err... that's all gone out the window.

COOL!!!

Good for you, girl.
And, I have to say I would love to meet you face to face.

:D

This thread is slipping again. B-T will be chasing us with a borrowed spirtle.

It isn't looking good for me. I'm getting more involved with opposing pubs wanting very long opening hours. So far I have participated in 5 hearings. They have until a date in late October to be decided so I may be at hearings 5 days a week - (and I'm retired! he yells to no one who is the slightest bit interested).

I know I promised you a drink but from some of the threads you started recently I think the drink should be Spa water...

...or you might start signing with parts of your anatomy.

Helloooooooo ... echooooo ... ooo ...

There's an echo in this thread.

I'm still uncertain because of political (with a small 'p') commitments that might extend close to that weekend.

Edinburgh is a long way for me by whatever means of transport. I would have to travel either side of the weekend and stop over on route even if I went by air. My local airport went bust, has now be bought, but they don't expect to resume passenger flights for at least 6 months. Gatwick, Heathrow and Stanstead would mean staying overnight with convenient relations.

So - I'm still a maybe. If there aren't any more definite responses I don't think the omens are good for Edinburgh.

I'm afraid you're right about the omens.

Gloria can't make it and Scheherazade is a no as well.

:(

Eff is not sure yet.

Hope it's not just me and Haldir having a pint together at the local. :p

Hey, Og, a couple of questions:

1 Is Yorkshire doable?
2 Can you be a passenger? (Extends to 'would your insurance cover me driving if you _must_ have your own car, not mine?' - [we could always buy extra cover, probably for less than petrol travelling separately].)

'Cos if so (and pub brawls, er, hearings, permitting) you could have a night chez mois and I'd drive to Auld Reeky & back.

And giving a lift to J-L (How're they hangin', Helen?) could fit too...

Just a thought,

I don't know that we can have two beards up here. Oh, and by the way, belated Happy Birthday 55!

PS (to Ogg)

Why not just tell them they can have 24 hour licences (or sweet F-A)? From what I hear it's chucking out time that's the problem...

Not down here. It's live music in buildings that are not sound insulated and next to, in some cases attached to, residential property. Rock bands to 1 or 2 am seven days a week isn't reasonable in residential areas. Some have been asking for music performance in pub gardens until 2am. If they were miles from houses - maybe. Next to blocks of flats, old people's homes, normal housing - no way.

If the sound isn't audible outside the premises then there is no problem. Only the two night clubs have spent sufficient money on sound insulation. Victorian pubs with etched single glazing and doors left wide open should not be pumping out 100db plus until the early hours seven days a week.

Og

PS. Off to bed. I'm facing the brewers' solicitors again tomorrow - all a long working day.

85 db(a) is the first action level in noise regulations. this is due (or may have already) to be reduced to 80 db(a), which is the level where an employer has to make ear protection available to employees. maybe not relevant since this isn't an Hand S at Work issue, but...

Won one at least.

The Company's Managing Director and effective owner - it is a family firm - withdrew the application for any live music.

The Licensing Committee added a condition that no noise from the premises (e.g. Juke Box, background music, bottle bins) should be heard within the boundaries of adjacent residential properties.

The only thing left is the noise and disturbance from those who are refused entry by the bouncers. The licencee's responsibility ends with the refusal. If those refused then throw litter bins through people's windows, smash bottles on walls and jump on parked cars, all of which has happened this weekend, then that isn't his fault.

My appearances at Licensing Committees are growing from one a week to 3 or 4 and then there are all the appeals to the Magistrates Court. If I don't appear the licence is granted exactly as asked for. I don't worry about what happens in the premises. We haven't said a word about lap-dancing, strippers, pole-dancing etc. I, as a contributor to Lit, am hardly in a position to preach morality. The organisations I represent aren't concerned either.

What we are worried about is noise, disturbance and criminal activities in the street around the licensed premises. I think people have a right to an undisturbed night on Sundays to Thursdays when they have to get up to go to work, and their children have to go to school the next morning. We expect Friday and Saturday nights to be noisier. We don't want that ALL week until 5am.

Og

PS. Back to thread. Edinburgh is looking very unlikely for me. The work I am doing on licensing will extend into late October. The decisions are made during the week but negotiating with landlords extends into my weekends.

Apart from me posting that I probably won't make it, is there any interest in this event?

My difficulty is timing. I may not be able to afford the time to take the journey in stages and travelling by public transport is not feasible because of back problems. Even a flight might be difficult. Travelling 100 miles to an airport, standing around for a couple of hours before flying and then transfer to Edinburgh city centre - I'd be needing a wheelchair for the weekend.

This will be my last bump of this thread. If no one else revives it I'll assume the event is not going to happen.

Thanks Eff for the offers. Maybe I'll be back in Yorkshire next year.

Og
