Am I just getting old?

Everyone that can take Benadryl to sleep, I am jealous! There is not one OTC thing that can help me sleep. I have severe insomnia.
I take 2 Benadryl a day, usually at night, because I get hives from stress. My 11 year old is also immune from taking them so often. She has allergies. Like bad allergies. So bad I home schooled her this year.
The only thing I have ever taken that put me to sleep was ambien but after a couple of years on it, I also became immune.
I was taking an ambien and a couple trazadones every night, ambien to put me to sleep, trazadone to keep me asleep. Ahhh the good old days. Now I have no insurance so no meds and I take sleep where and when I can get it.

Getting old, hmmm it happens.
I will sometimes write, leave a story only to come back and full remember the beginning but not the last few bits I wrote.

Also I used to write after taking ambien and never remembered any of that stuff. It was like Who wrote this last night????? :D hehehe

Funny. Thank you

I'm allergic to it. Of all the people I've known to be on it, I'm the only one I know who is allergic to it.

You are not the only one, WW. I know someone else they almost killed with it. She is also allergic to Benedryl, the very thing they give you for allergic reactions. I dont know how many people know this, but FYI, over the counter sleeping pills are/have the exact same ingredients as Benedryl. Found that out the hard way when her doctor suggested giving her otc sleeping pills for the insomnia associated with dementia. BIG mistake! :( (sorry...back to topic of antiquities...)[/QUOTE]

Thank you.

I guess we all have idiosyncrasies and with medications they are very noticeable. I'm sorry to read of the plight of your friend. Dementia is never easy.

They were talking about dementia today on the radio and some one said that some times a faecal transplant will help with dementia. I think I should wear padding because I almost fell over. My mind still boggles. Apparently antibiotic use has destroyed bowel flora that is very important as it keeps us well. It is also supposed to help with autism. I don't know where the research was done or how credible it is but it's recent. I find it interesting.

I'm not a doctor. But I've met a few people with diplomas on their walls and read a lot of medical crap on line.
I've heard and read a lot about taking Virgin Coconut Oil for dementia.

My wife takes the two popular 'useless' pills for dementia. They may or may not help. Several friends have also taken those for over ten years. Both have gotten worse, became vegetables, and died since. With insurance it's worth the gamble.
The VIRGIN COCONUT OIL, two table spoons a day, one morning and nite, seem to help my wife who has not gotten noticably worse in several years. It's in the cooking oil section of any grocery store. One 50+ oz jar lasts for months. Even if it doesn't work it won't harm you.

As for the Benedryl, I've been taking two of the generic brand bed time for two weeks plus my regularly prescribed sleeping pill with no side affects. I usually sleep several hours at a time.

BUT I have another problem. I'm nearly finished getting a radiation treatment every week day for prostate cancer. This causes the urge to pee and crap randomly and irregularly which means I'm up every two to three hours. It takes sometimes an hour to get back to sleep or in a doze.

I'm telling this for only one reason, Virgin Coconut Oil seems to be the only thing to slow dementia and Benedryl does not bother everyone.

My real question is why do I need sleep aids when I'm so damned sleepy? Maybe I really am just getting old.

You know, every one has health cover here, absolutely every one. No exceptions. We get it as citizens. It is our right. I don't understand how any wealthy country doesn't have it. I'm sorry.

I hope the radiation does the trick.

I tend to get a premise for a story and get started but it gets what you call 'parked' because I don't want the body of it to be repetitive. I have the beginning and maybe an ending that closes the storyline or leaves it open for continuing stories but I don't want to just fill in with typical sexual activity in the middle. Sometimes that might be all I can come up with not finding anything unique or exotic to use so if I get back to it that's what it is. That's how many of my stories get parked and are waiting for a finish.

My wife and I share way too much on here. But we try to be helpful. Getting old is not easy but sometimes it's fun.

My friend in Amsterdam doesn't understand how we can have people in the US with no health care. It's really scary. She told me to try to move to Norway!

I make too much money for free state insurance but not enough to qualify for anything under the affordable care act. Stuck in a stupid loophole.

My iron lung has a short circuit and sometimes I can't breathe for a couple minutes at a time and I pass out. It's usually right in the middle of writing the hottest sex scene of my life and when I come to, I can't remember a damn thing.

Yeah. Getting old sucks.

The US healthcare system is rather different from Australia or Canada (Canada is the only non US systems I'm familiar with. Here, you really need a goof health insurance plan, is what it boils down to. It's complicated to explain.

Although there are those who would rather lay off much of our National Health Service into private hands (complete with fat cats and little 'extras', no doubt), our Health system is "Free at the point of use" to all. This does not include Dentistry or Chiropody.

I'm very glad it is free. I'd have probably died at the age of 5 with Polio (I was sleeping next to an Iron Lung for a while) or a few years ago with the costs of Chemo or Radio -therapy for cancer.

I do this all the time... well not all the time. Most of the time I remember. When I find one I don't remember it makes me happy, well if it's good it makes me happy! :)

In a way, I envy writers who know where their story is going from the start.
In my case, I begin with an idea or a theme, then the characters take over and guide me along as the story unfolds. Most of the time, they surprise me with unexpected twists and surprise endings.
I'm mostly describing their life rather than writing a story I thought out before I sat at the keyboard.
Is it a form of dementia?

I'm a prolific writer and I'll couch stories (usually novel or novella-length though I tried my hand at shorts with some success) at the spark of an idea.
Last fall, for various reasons, I did just that to an extreme. In some cases, the story was well developped and coming along nicely, then I got distracted by another idea and started writing it.
Then, for health reasons, I didn't write all of last wilter so I find myself with quite a few unfinished stories. I know what I wanted to do with them (or, at least, in which direction my characters were going). My main problem is recapturing the style of each particular story as I do tend to vary from one to the other.
Is a wandering mind a sign of old age?

You poor bugger! You need to update to a ventilator. Iron lungs went out with the flood. You've done very well to last so long.

I like being older. It's good. I can do what I want. People are so tolerant of older people.

I have a farm now. Always wanted one, driving the tractor, setting it up to be excitingly different. Life with a purpose.

Best is I'll soon be with my kids. I want that so much.

Haha! I was glad to read your post and know I'm not the only one with "parked" stories.

If you check out my lit author page, you will find ONE lonely published story. I can't count the number of stories that are somewhere in the process. Most are completed first drafts that I "parked" for the week to go back to with a fresh pair of eyes... and the week turned into weeks or months.

For me, I have three (dare I say it...) kids and the time to write is rather limited. When I have come back to a story, there are often chunks I don't remember until my memory is jogged as I read it. I don't know whether it's age or just so much going on in my brain that some of that content got purged. lol
