Any birdwatchers?

Would any bird-watching folks be interested in offering advice about hawks? I'm writing a story about a shapeshifter who spends most of her time as a bird.

If they're species I know, I'd be happy to give it a shot.
Mostly I am looking at Swainson's hawks and what other species could be potentially mis-ID'd as one. The idea is that there's a researcher looking into Swainson's hawks, but instead he discovers this novel species (the fictional shapeshifter birds) and becomes obsessed.

Interesting. I actually kept a Swainson’s hawk for a friend one summer when I was in high school. But teenage was 60 years ago. At this point, Swainson’s not being native to my area, I probably don't have any more technical information that the next person. What I do remember is power. A grip like an iron vise. By the end of the summer she was sufficiently accustomed to me that I could handle her without a gauntlet— but still, you could feel through that grip what she could do to you if she wanted to.
