My father recently passed. One of the few things that he left was a stamp collection. Now I am the first to admitt that I know little to nothing about stamp collecting. I am looking to sell this collection. Anyone that might have a suggestion on how I would go about ascertaining a value of the collection. If you have questions about the collection it self please pm. Thanks for all your imput.

holden... sorry about the loss of your father.

i don't know squat abuot stamps either, so i can only hope this helps...

try your local post office. even in my little backwards-ass redneck town, the postmaster can be remarkably helpful on this issue.

you may also find it useful to track down a philatelist... which is the fancy word for stamp-collector. most cities have stamp & coin shops in them SOMEWHERE but they're often hard to find.

the only other thing i can tell you is that these things rarely generate the revenue they're actually worth. if you get a good idea of face-value, a good rule of thumb is to cut that figure in half to get the "sell price."

good luck.

I'd see if you've got some kind of Stamp shop, somewhere that deals in stamps...they'll probably be able to give you a good idea.

Or get one of the stamp value books, but stamps very rarely fetch the prices quoted in those, as EJ fan says...about half the amount they say is probably close to the mark.

Do Antique places and or auction houses take stamp collections? I'm not sure..but it is a possible avenue to explore.

Sorry I've not got very much helpful advice there, I collected stamps as a kid so my knowledge is limited.

A thought -- contact your insurance agent and ask who they use for valuations of stamp collections for insurance purposes.

Now that is a very good Idea! Thank you!

Another thought: Your father's insurance provider may already have a valuation on the collection. It may not be up-to-date, but it will give you a benchmark on whether its incresing or decresing in value when compared to new valuation.

Helloooooooo. Remember me? *giggles* You talk to me about cars (which I know NOTHING about) for 1/2 hour and never mention stamps.

I've been collecting stamps since I was 8 when I got to work on a family friend's collection that he'd been working on since he was about 10 (which put us back to the late 1930's/early 1940's). My payment was in lots of really old stamps. That got me started and I was hooked.

I recently took my albums to one of those antique appraisals that antique guilds hold every so often to stimulate interest and shake out a few things from attics and closets. Imagine my unhappiness at being told that my ALBUMS were worth more than the stamps, because they were intact and in good condition. Go figure.

So, what kind of dishes did your dad have? Right now, some older American regular everyday dishes are fetching more than special occasion china. Talk to me about dishes. I'm your man. yep.

Someplace

It seems that the more I get to know you the more I realize how little I know about you! We will be talking about this soon
