I'm relocating to boise and would like to know anything about the place.

i have friends that live there and have visited them. Can't tell you alot, but from what I have seen and experienced there you should like it. Very beautiful place, I just hope you like cold winters. ;)

There's a diverse high tech industry. Jobs are not too hard to find. Its growing very quickly. Its a relatively family orientated community, but there are a lot of young active single people. The night life is good. Lots of outdoor type activities within a short drive (or bike ride). Boise's great....just don't tell anyone else.

Thanks , thats exactly what I wanted to hear. and a tech job is exactly what I'm looking for...ever hear of Micron?

Micron is a huge computer chip manufacturer. They are based here in Boise, but they have plants all over the world, so they get poeple from all over the world coming here to work. Great place to work, and I know they are hiring. If you have a tech background, you shouldn't have any trouble getting on.

This is sounding really good, I checked out their website and it looks inviting. I have two tech. degrees so I might as well check them out.
Any places or things I should keeps a heads up about or watch for or even stay away from?

Boise is a relatively safe city if that's what you mean. Can't think of any areas you have to stay away from. If you end up working for Micron you might want to look for a house or apt. in south east Boise. The Columbia Village area is very close to Micron. The cheapest houses will be around 130 to 150K. If you want to find one under 100K you have to go to Nampa which is a 30 min commute to Micron. However, Micron is going to be opening another smaller plant in Nampa within a few months. Apartments should be easy to fiind.

I'd recommend flying out for a couple days to check it out.

Good luck!

Thanks alot your a real help :) I got some material from a relocation real estate agent but it still didn't offer any explanations, just a bunch of ads. I have a few maps and I see where your talking about the distances. I also saw that you have HP out there to, do you have any info on them? I have a few contacts through Micron but would like to keep my options open. I was told after a initial interview in Ohio the would fly me out there for three days, hotel and car included, but I'll have to wait a few weeks for info.
Thanks again :D

In Boise

The winters are not cold here (of course I'm from Alaska). The last few years it has got into the high teens / low 20's at night and much warmer during the day.

Summer is high 90's to low 100's, highest we had was 115 for about a week but that was a few years ago, it is 104 today.

Good luck finding a decent house for 100K in Nampa, property values are skyrocketing in the treasure valley. In the last 2 years 3 bed / 2 bath houses have gone from 130K in Boise to over 200K. Our house appreciated 130K in Meridian in 1 year.

Boise has been named #1 place to live by several magazines, #1 place to operate a small business and violent crime dropped by 15% from last year.

It is a great place to live, access to wilderness, about 500,000 in the treasure valley and ready access to other states / areas.

Just like any city there are places you shouldn't go alone after dark, particularly if you are a woman but not many (mostly Nampa / Caldwell where there is a lot of gang activity compared to Boise).

Boise, Meridian, Garden City, Eagle are all close together, Eagle is where the richies live.

According to the government Idaho has the lowest electricity price in the country ($0.08 / kwh on average).

HP employees about 5500 people, Micron about 10K. Boise is a mini silicon valley and has a ton of technology jobs, particularly programming (used to be IT but that has decreased in the last few years, still not bad). Cost of living is pretty low.

HP requires at least a bachelor degree (master preferred) for programming positions.

LaserJet used to be soley done in Boise, now about 50% of LaserJet is in Boise, 25% in India and 25% in China.

Micron is hiring like crazy, especially software engineers / programming, they opened about 130 reqs in the last 2 months or so.
