Oh really I always thought it was to do with the kids and getting outta school dunno why. I just wish they would leave it. Think we are the only ones that mess around with the time.

I'm not sure of all the detail, but I think it may have something to do with Scotland. They would be in darkness a lot longer which may cause issues with children going o school etc. Maybe someone from Scotland could confirm that?

It started in world war 1 to conserve coal supplies. I have no idea idea why it has been retained other than a view that it boosts productivity.
 
It doesn't change the amount of daylight in the summer by one second, or the darkness in Scotland. It started when evening leisure became a thing in London, to allow gentlemen to get home in daylight. There's also the story of the builder cycling through town at 5am in bright sunshine while everyone was still asleep. Then the clocks were changed during both wars to put us on the same time as Germany.

Instead of lying about the time, just open government offices and schools an hour earlier in the summer.

They do it in some states in the US too, call it Daylight Saving Time.
 
It's most beneficial to the far south east of the country and most detrimental to the far north west. Where are our laws made?

the idea is that businesses would be open in daylight hours, so less energy needed to light them. It had been mooted before WWI as a way of using the "wasted mornings" and during WWI Germany implemented the idea and other countries followed the factories could run without the need to light them as much.

the biggest problem, for me, is the sudden change. if you just go with the natural flow of daylight, it's fine.

anyway, nothing to do with leisure, only business

70 countries change their clocks mostly in Europe and North America.
 
There's calls for UK Summer Time to be permanent. One of the main drivers is the reduction in car accidents which peak at dusk which sort of coincides with school home time and part of the rush hour in winter. It wouldn't be so good for Scotland but they're devolved and could change it which would be so funny as I think the SNP are against this change so would they then enforce a different time zone on Scotland for half the year?
