How long does it usually take to get a story approved?

When I was a volunteer editor under another nom de plume, I saw a story accepted less than two hours after it was accepted but I've also seen it take nine or ten days. Time for acceptance seems to depend largely on whether or not a contest is in progress, how heavy submissions are at the time, and how much time is available to screen them. Hang in there, painful though it may be; you'll get an answer.
