As far as it goes, no one really gives a shit who writes the story, as long as it's well written, as far as amateurs are concerned and the reader enjoys it. I'm not sure what throw away stories are, perhaps they are the kind you write, but too many of mine are faved, as well as myself as an author, to ever take what you say with any merit.

I was going to ask about this--and then found this thread. I've only published a couple stories to the site (mainly heavily rewritten and edited prose versions of threads a co-author in the SRP forum had done in the past, as a kind of writing exercise while waiting for her to post.) But there have been about five comments I've had to erase for being ridiculously abusive.

Usually, my offending act was daring to not write the story in the exact way they would have written it, which leads them to anonymously inform me I don't know how to write and then heap abuse on me. I don't really mind that, honestly. Most of them demonstrate a grasp of diction, grammar, and basic sentence structure that scream 'I'm an idiot' and I don't care what idiots think.

What pisses me off is the 1 bombing of the ratings these jerks also do. Most of my stories would be rated as "hot" without people deliberately trying to sink the score out of spite. But thanks to that practice, they're both hovering around a 4 out of 5 rating. It would be nice if you had to be logged in to rate a story and users who rated an unusually high number of stories with a 1 were denied the privilege of rating stories.

Hmm . . . Not counting the time I got raged at for putting sci-fi BDSM in Sci-fi instead of BDSM, I've never gotten an outspoken troll on a story in Sci-fi or Nonhuman. For a while, there was someone who 1-bombed everything I posted, but I think there was just one of those people. I wonder if those sections are relatively troll-free.

Gm and Non human seem the "friendliest"

Non Human pretty much is the nicest board I've come across. 2 stories in 42 chapters, 3 overtly bad reviews. I'd say that a fabulous track record compared to other portions of the site.

One tip is to drift toward the outlying fetishes of fiction, where like-minded people are more likely to be. You know, outcasts banded together and whatnot.
However, if you do care about the comments and don't have an outlying fetish, you may just be SOL.

Most of the categories are relatively free of the nastier comments. Loving Wives is obviously ground zero. Next in line would probably be non-con. Following that I think Incest is actually #3 - though there they get drowned out by the positive comments ( unless the story is truly awful, or has a non-con theme )

With everything else, it's usually triggered by something specific ( M/M scenes, watersports, scat, etc. ) or just a one-off by a personal or drive-by troll.

Outside of those three categories, the ratio of negative comments is nominal. The avalanche of nastiness from those three is enough to make the entire readership seem like a cesspool of bitter, poorly educated, reality-challenged jackasses, though. They're the most popular categories on the site, and end up coloring perceptions more than they really should.

I have had negative comments, but I have also had constructive criticism - that can hurt more.

When someone takes the time and effort to write criticism about the story, particularly how I wrote parts of it, and says WHY they didn't like what I did - they may well be right. They could have a valid point even if they misunderstood and the point they are making only shows I wasn't clear at that part of the story.

That sort of criticism helps me to become a better writer. Sometimes I have to stop my instinctive reaction to defend my story. I know I never write the story as well as it is in my head. The steps from the idea to the completed story can make a good idea useless, a plot ridiculous, or can produce stupid errors.

I ought to revise and rewrite some of my stories, especially the older ones written 15 years or more ago. But I'm not the person who wrote those stories. If I started to rewrite them, they would be very different. I leave them as they are, mainly to remind me that I have changed as a writer. Sometimes those older stories get a new comment that makes me think 'I ought to rewrite' again.

However I am puzzled by abusive comments from people who obviously don't like the category. Why read a category if it repels you? And if you do, why leave a comment that would be appropriate to any story in that category?

Anonymous can be helpful, appreciative, complimentary, or just stupid.
