Yep...I'm head over heels with her...
I'm not sure how it all happened but my partner specialises in womens issues in therapy and one of my research area in literature has been women in the 19th and 20th century. So there is quite a bit of overlap between our work. She can give me some real insights into what I'm reading plus, after psychology her favourite study was British history so, again, she can share information that I don't know and haven't time to learn.
Over the years we have amassed this library of video and books that tie into women's issues. I'm suprised about the movie (Foxfire) because I actually had to come to the US to buy it. They wanted about $120 for it here, so I got it at Borders in Houston for about $12. It's a coming of age, self-awareness for a group of young women...say 16-18 years old and in high school. It dramatically illustrates the acceptable behaviour for "girls" and what happens to them when they violate those rules. I found it very moving but I'm sure opinions vary!
I've always been fascinated by the punishment still meted out to "misbehaving" women in Hollywood. A favourite is Fatal Attraction. I mean, what's the deal? Glenn Close isn't an adulteress...Michael Douglas is the adulterer. What's his punishment? The avenging angel, of course, is Anne Archer who forgives her husband's trangressions and punishes the "bitch" who has taken up with him. And you can't miss the happy family photo on the stand in the hall after the deed is done! It's great fodder for papers but really, as Moon Zappa would say, "gag me with a spoon...I am sure!"
Gosh it's late and I'm off on holiday tomorrow (yippee).
Later
(sorry about the spelling and stuff...I've been very lazy...very bad!)
