were you trying to be disingenuous...
QUOTE WEIRD HAL
I know that because many years ago, when the monthly contests were first starting and the special contests were just a vague plan for the future, Laurel
explicitly said "we won't tell you what we consider a fraudulent vote or tell you how we detect them because if we let that information out, people will find a way to cheat the system" I've neither seen nor heard anything in the intervening decade that makes a substantive change in that policy. ETA: Those were public discussions of how voting was going to work, so they may be buried back in the archives among the very first forum posts. They might also have been far enough back to be under the UBB forum software and thus not transfered over to the vBulletin software forums
Hal ,my question How do you know that? clearly referred to your line (which immediately preceded it in my post) In general, fraudulent votes are votes that fit some pattern indicative of reasons other than the story content driving the votes My question was asking how you knew what fraudulent votes were if she explicitly said she wasn’t going to tell you.
I have no doubt that once upon a time LAUREL
decided to institute a sweep system in an attempt to stop cheaters winning the contests. First off let me just state that it’s failed miserably!
Further, if your memory of LAURELS
words are correct – "we won't tell you what we consider a fraudulent vote or tell you how we detect them because if we let that information out, people will find a way to cheat the system" – someone at the time should have explained to her that voting systems lose all credibility when they aren’t transparent. They simply become “Banana Republic” type mockeries under which the same old despots get returned to power.
Obviously no one expects the ROYALS
to explain the techniques they’re using to detect these “fraudulent” votes.
However, defining what a fraudulent vote is another matter. In fact it’s the essence of any legitimate voting system. Without it you have nothing. Your credibility is lost.
The monthly contests have fallen into such disrepute at LITEROTICA that they’re now announced months late – so late that no one can question or verify the vote totals. The prizes invariably go to some Chapter 17 of a story in a category that the majority of our readers disdain. Then we call them “Readers Choice Awards”. It’s almost humorous.
The special contests are even worse. It’s got so bad that the ROYALS
don’t even have the balls to publish the vote results at the end of the contest. They’re embarrassed to post how many votes every story got and what score it got. Either before or after the sweeps! A voting system under which you’re afraid to publish the results?
The site would be far better off just cancelling the whole contest system and then using the prize money instead to dole out welfare to the toadies that grovel the best. Heck, they’re the ones getting it now anyway!
I’m james r scouries, and I’m an expert on votes…
