Because they had to separate their sect from Judaism in order to better appeal to gentiles and to avoid being lumped in with the Jews by the Romans who got fed up and crushed Jerusalem around 67 AD. The first pope was Jesus' s brother Simon and he sure has been erased, historically. Paul played a huge role in all of this. Tricky tactician, like Mohammed. I dunno why a lot of churches seem to forget that after Mary had Jesus that her and joseph went on to pop Jesus out a brother possibly two.

I think again that this may in a small part the blame of the Roman Catholic Church {No I am not trying to knock them, they just seem to always popup} pushing the whole virgin female line of Mary, some of their teachings says that Mary's Mom, Mary, and Jesus were all born to virgin parents, some just Mary and Jesus.

And If you play that sort of musical note then admitting that Jesus had brothers really hurts that song.

Make sense, probably not, I rarely do.

I know most of the Baptist, Weslyn, Presbeterian{sp}, Luthern, Anglican, United churches I have gone to admit to Jesus having Brother james at the minimal.
