Australia Day

Your thoughts?

Fantastic day out. Sitting here with my VB.

Tell us how you really feel.

Hey Smiley. Sorry I missed you holiday and about your sister.

I was once infatuated with an Aussie poster, seeing this made me think of her and hope she is well. I hope you are, too.

I'd like to see your country some day.

Australia Day has reminded me that I have a copy of the Annual Register for 1788 - giving all the major events in the world for that year. The Annual Register was published in the following year for a couple of hundred years and this one was printed in 1789.

Years ago (in 1988!) I sent another copy for 1788 to my old school in Melbourne. They still have it in their library.

BUT - the Annual Register for 1788 does not mention Australia or the First Fleet at all. Why would it? From the perspective of England in 1788 no one knew or cared that the First Fleet had left for Australia.

Happy Australia Day to all those living in Australia.

Because they didnt leave in 1788 thats when they landed, and it wouldnt have been significant by that detail.... they had no idea how big this joint was.

Australia wasn't mentioned in the Annual Registers for 1787, 1789, 1790, 1791...

I feel like I missed a holiday I didn't know existed.

Happy Australia day all you Aussie nuts.

Austria Day is over now. The 'roos are back in their cages in Salzburg. Refilled beer kegs have been ritually rolled over trapped Muslim refugees. Aerial tramways are running. The night is calm.

I had a couple of friends round and we chilled, had a non-bbq dinner.
I'm over this bullshit about changing the date.

Fuck it's hot.

Hardly surprising seeing that it didn't exist as a political entity until 1901.:) The Western half was still under aboriginal control for another 50 years after 1788

Convict transportation ceased about 1860 and the last convict to survive did not die until 1938. There were only ever about 60,000 convicts transported but they left an indelible mark on the National Character - particularly disregard for authority. Og was sent back to England - no cause admitted.:D

I did some 'sponsorships' at a citizenship ceremony for Australia day. It included a Bostonian American and his wife who have lived here 30 years and thought they should, and an Afghan refugee (and now successful businessman) with his family. The women in particular got on like a house on fire at the post ceremony barbie. We had over 20 different former nationalities at the barbie .

Australia has changed significantly since I left. I was only there for two years and knew my departure date when I arrived. I enjoyed my time there and was given permission to remain but I had other plans. My NSW relations would have helped me if I had wanted to stay.

In the 1950s Australia's immigration policy was (insert abusive word here). They welcomed white Europeans but that was all.

Now Australia is a much more welcoming place for anyone who meets their current criteria. So is the UK.

As for the Annual Register? It didn't mention Australia, New South Wales, Van Diemen's Land or any part of what is now Australia. I think the first mention was the 1808 Rum Rebellion against Captain Bligh when he was Governor of NSW.

As Randy Neuman says in Political Science:

Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us
We'll save Australia
Don't want to hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an all American amusement park there
They've got surfing, too
