My point is, if that is true, and I'm sure it is, how can he be denied a tourist visa., like any other foreigner?

As Coin Desk noted, this all boils down to Immigration Service being afraid that Ver will try to stay longer than his visa will allow. What’s more, because Ver renounced his citizenship in America to avoid paying taxes, Ver is inadmissible. According to 8 USC 1182(a)(10)(E), in American immigration law:
Any alien who is a former citizen of the United States who officially renounces United States citizenship and who is determined by the Attorney General to have renounced United States citizenship for the purpose of avoiding taxation by the United States is inadmissible.
That provision alone is enough to reject Ver’s visa applications. However, there is more to Ver’s past that also makes him ineligible for a temporary visa. In 2002, Ver pleaded guilty to one criminal count each of dealing in explosives without a license, illegal storage of explosives, and mailing injurious articles. In short, he sold, poorly stored, and shipped explosives on eBay.
My apologies, I did not see the link in the OP, and did not know he was a convicted criminal. I did notice he was convicted of trafficking in "explosives." One would think he was shipping dynamite or C-4, Turns out he was selling Pest Control Report 2000 firecrackers, each containing up to 1 gram, or 0.035 ounce, of explosive powder. Big deal.![]()
There was a time in my lifetime when anyone 18 years old could buy dynamite if they needed to from our local feed store.![]()

Truth is the federal government can make you, I, or any citizen a criminal any time they please. They have a mountain of laws and regulations to choose from. Don't be naive.
Ahhh, so your argument is that he shouldn't have been prosecuted for breaking three (at least) federal statutes because 40+ years ago you could buy dynamite at the feed store? I imagine you would be just fine with his storing 50 lbs of explosives in a residential apartment? Shipping explosives well beyond the legal limit via USPS endangering postal carriers? He's not a real criminal but instead was harassed and jailed for no other reason than that the government wanted to make him a convict?
Please feel free to correct any of the above.
