Has anyone had a severely sprained big toe (commonly known as Turf Toe)?

How long did it take until you could walk without pain?

Besides R.I.C.E., pain relievers and a hard-soled shoe, did anything help the pain or healing?

I hurt mine a few days ago. The first day I was almost limping. It gets a little better every day.

You're very lucky. I still can't move mine more than a few degrees either way without major pain or have weight on it for any significant length of time after a week and a half. I'm forced to use a disabled parking permit and ride the scooter in big stores.

Apparently this kind of injury usually takes 4-8 weeks to heal, but I'm hoping someone here will have some ideas on how to hasten recovery.

Didn't sprain my big toe but did break my little toe. All they did was bandage it to the toe beside it to immobilize it so it didn't hurt while it healed. Don't know, but you may already be doing that.

Heal quickly Erika.

I sprained mine playing soccer in college. I don't think that my recovery regimen would do you much good: I simply stayed drunk until it didn't hurt. And no, I don't have a clue how long that took.

Ouch! My mom did that a month ago when she dropped a paint can on her foot.
I'd much rather have it buddy-taped, but because it plays such a big role in walking and is the main joint that's most injured, they put it in an Ace bandage and terribly fashionable orthopedic shoe.

Thanks for the well wishes. :rose:

Yank, I said something to that effect last night when we went to a Mariners game. :D

So, the Mariners were that bad, eh? Or did you forget and kick a seat support out of frustration?

I've had both broken and sprained toes. The pain is pretty amazingly intense and unrelenting. I have found that binding that toe to another toe to immobilize (only for a few hours at a time and NOT too tight) can help. Drugs can help pain wise but are fairly impractical if you actually have to drive, live your life and so on. I'd say the worst was usually over within a week for me.

They didn't pull out of their losing streak until the next night (WA teams seem to have a knack for doing really well most of the game/season, then screwing everything up at the end), but my toe's a casualty of our stairs at 1am. :(

Good advice, Fury. You're right, it seemed the major effects resolved after a week, and I've noticed I'm getting a little more mobility each day. I'm trying to move it as much as I can comfortably so I'm less likely to have problems when I get out of the orthopedic shoe.

I'm glad to hear it!

Hope you are feeling all better soon.

awww come on, u don't enjoy riding those carts around in the store? i mean, thats gotta count for something right?

If you use moleskin (Foot area in pharnacy) wrap the big toe this will cushion for walking. Do not put more than one layer around the toe or else you will add pressure and change your pronation on your foot.

That's a thought, but the main injury is actually to the main joint that moves the big toe, rather than the toe itself.

I'm able to walk a little barefoot and in normal shoes now, but if I'm not careful about how I step, I overdo it at all or wear the wrong shoes, I'm back to severe pain. I can't take anti-inflammatories, but elevating and icing it when it hurts, along with going easy on it and keeping it mobile, seems to be helping.

Must be a challenge to swing a flogger when you can't make the proper weight shift from one foot to the other. ;)

I've only had one big scene recently. :( It was with a girl who was mostly into sensation and bondage. She's more of a pain weenie than I am, which is quite an accomplishment.

She didn't seem to mind the strap-on, either, come to think of it. :p

I'm surprised no one mentioned using a cane. Since the Big Toe is a big player in balance when walking, using a cane can help take pressure off it. My aunt broke hers twice and used a cane both times. Said it helped a lot.

Oh, a WALKING cane! Given Yank's comments, I was trying to figure out how the rattan canes in my toy drawers would help my poor toe. :D

I used a crutch for the first week or so, and suppose a cane wouldn't be a bad idea, but it's probably not necessary at this point. As long as I continue to be careful with it, it should be okay.

If I have another toe injury in the future, I will definitely look into getting a cane, though. :)

Maybe you should go with your first impression...beat the damned toe into submission. :D :D

Buddy taping is your friend... its not just for sex anymore!!! Sorry you hurt your toe. For such a silly injury to a small part of the body, it can really be awful. I demolished the joint in one of my big toes. Taping it to the next toe is about the only other thing I can think of short of involving a needle.
