I saw what you're talking about when my father-in-law was moved into a rehab center and nursing home. Well, I heard it from the nurses there when I'd walk to the close-by Dunkin Donuts to pick up his donuts and coffee...and the donuts for the staff he really loved. (The ones my wife credits for extending his life, fully and richly, for 4 years.)

I work a full time job as a bookkeeping assistant in a nursing home during the week. On the weekend, I work a bakery. Pasteries made fresh every day. I can even barista.
This and I have a college degree in Education. Who says college does not pay?

1/10 of the patients are wards of the state. They have been exploited by their family and have no one else to take care of them. 1/3 of the nursing home' population used to be homeless. They inspire me every day.

Oh, I'm in full support of higher education. And if I didn't just woof down a sleeve of fig newtons I'd be sooo jealous of your pastries!

What made me upset were those patients that didn't have anyone coming to visit them, even though they had family living close.

We have that. We become their family. We adopt them on the holidays and get them presents.
