Beer club

I really enjoy beer, but I try not to drink too much, because it’s fattening. 😂 (hey, I’m in my mid-50s!)

I work for a company, and last year I parlayed a business trip, into some really good travel all over Germany and into France.

I absolutely just fell in love with the classic Central European Pilsner - pils. Not the classic type like Pilsner urqell, every day drinking pils. I drank my way from Bavaria up to Berlin, and then over to Paris.

Even in France, I was surprised beer was as popular as it is. It was also summertime, which I’m sure helped. In France, beer is see as a working man’s drink, and I have a working class mindset and background so I appreciated it.

So, luckily, for me, there’s a really good liquor store near me that for whatever reason has all kinds of great central European Pilsner. I’ve been pretty much drinking that for the last 10 months!

It’s nothing too special, just every day good drinking beer. But I’m really enjoying it, especially because they come in half liter bottles and that’s the perfect amount for dinner. (For me)

Ukrainian: Lvivskie and Obolon. (Lviv is really good!)
Polish: Lomza, Żywiec, Okocim, Warka
Czechia: Praga, Pilsner urquell and Czekvar (called Budweiser in Europe)
And of course Germany: Bitburger, Berliner, Jever (from my cousins hometown), warsteiner

Yep. Those you listed are certainly good ones

Hey Wonderer,

as a German I beg to differ. Germany has a lot of great beers, it's all about availability though, especially abroad.

My humble opinion regarding the brands you mentioned:
Bitburger - OK, if nothing better is available
Berliner - never had it, probably more of a regional brand
Jever - good, just not my taste, too bitter
Warsteiner - the butt of the same joke as American beers - it's similar to sex in a canoe.

Among the "TV beers" (i.e. the big brands that do TV ads), Radeberger is the best in my opinion.

In general, I prefer Bavarian Helles. Augustiner is my go to beer I have at home. If you ever get to Franconia, definitely have a few beers there! It's the Garden of Eden for beer lovers. Lots of breweries there, mostly small, only sold locally. But they are absolutely great.

I totally agree with what you wrote about the Czech beers - Gambrinus is another good one in my memory. Can't judge on the Polish and Ukrainian ones as I've never tried them. And I'm 100% with you in the working class attitude!

I hope I didn’t infer that the German ones were not good. On the contrary, it could be some of the best beers’

I work for a company based out of Munich, and trips there are always great. The culture, but especially the beer, beer gardens and all of the different breweries.

Last summer, my boss and I hiked through the woods and up this big hill to get to this beautiful little momastery brewery called Kloster Andechs.

Some of the best beer I’ve ever had.

I agree, the little breweries are the best.

One of the reasons why I like jever so much, is because it’s from near where my cousins live in ostfriesland.

Funny, we went to dinner a few nights ago and they had jever on tap.

Here in the US, beer is dominated by the big players, but over the last 30 years or so there’s been quite a good craft beer, revolution, with lots of good breweries, popping up here, there and everywhere.

I agree with you, Helles is great, but most breweries do IPAs and really strong and hoppy ales. my wife likes that style,, but give me a European pils any day of the week!

No worries, I didn't understand your post as criticism. I just wanted to elaborate further.

We haven't even started on Belgian beers yet.

Cheers! 🍻

If you see Leinenkugel Red Lager for sale - grab it! I'm a sucker for almost any "red" beers, whites ... not so much.

Jake appreciates your likes.

(oops, he retired)
