Tentacles mostly bring back bad memories of A-level Biology for me. The syllabus included way too much anatomical drawing of specimens, most of which had been in their formaldehyde pots for over 25 years and tended to be missing bits, so you kept having to swap the one you were copying.

For my part, I often skip the sex scenes when I'm reading. Getting me to read one is a feat -- unless I've somehow committed to the author that I will read it. The setup is important to me, and if there's a "flow" to the story, then I might just get swept up in it.

It is striking that experiences so extraordinary, in all ways, as arousal and sensual pleasure, are difficult to capture well in words.

Many attempts, here and in mainstream literature, end up in the 'boring' category, with rote descriptions and a curious disassociation with cognition. I am impressed most by those who bring their character(s) to life through their sexual connections. Doesn't need to be poetic (although I would rather that than routine) but requires a balance of authenticity and perception.

One of the dangers, as with all description of sense events (I am thinking of wine writing here) is what has sometimes been called the 'prismatic luminescence' style of description. But I still prefer even that stab at imagination rather than the 'training manual' or 'lab notes' approach.

I like scenes that further the broader story in some way. Looking back at my own stories, what I tend to remember about the sex scenes is not so much the physical action as the story/relationship milestones: this is the scene where T and K stop treating one another as rivals and start working together to protect the person they both care about, these scenes mark the shift from a vulnerable/protector dynamic to a more equal relationship between two adults, this scene marks A's learning to set boundaries even if it hurts somebody else's feelings.
