I'm going to be honest, I did NOT expect this from Joe Biden. Biden is the last of his generation, the ones that truly believed that marijuana WAS a gateway drug to teh hard stuff. His Congressional record was almost exclusively anti-legalization, pro-lock 'em up.

I believe it's about 1600. It wasn't meant to be ground shaking for the pardons as much as the step forward for enforcement changes which he wants the states to also adopt.

Also the last generation that was invariably, unapologetically homophobic, but we have him to thank in part for gay marriage gaining so much support in the past couple of decades. People evolve, or at least Democrats do.

If marijuana is a gateway drug that is because it is illegal. Once someone gets used to breaking the law to buy and smoke marijuana it becomes emotionally easier to break the law to try other illegal drugs that really are dangerous. Also, if someone can sell a person marijuana that person can probably sell that person hard drugs. If marijuana is legalized those gateways will be closed. It will become possible to buy marijuana in liquor stores, drug stores, and even grocery stores.

There are some people who should not smoke marijuana, just as there are some people who should not drink alcohol, and no one should smoke cigarettes. Most people can enjoy marijuana and alcohol lightly and safely.

Gay rights is not my issue. I would not join a movement to persecute homosexuals. I would not join a movement to prevent homosexuals from being persecuted. Nevertheless, I think the problem is not that some homosexuals want to get married; it is that many heterosexuals do not want to get married and to stay married to the people with whom they have children, and to raise those children properly.

If enough governors actually make changes at the state level, the political pressure would make it easy. There's nothing medically that would prevent it.
