I don't remember just where it was that I saw a website that listed and told the stories of dozens of people killed by police. One estimate puts the figure at 1039 last year.

Kicy Motley, the director of the Brooklyn community affairs unit working for New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, has a history of making anti-cop statements, and Rachel Noerdlinger, the former chief of staff to de Blasio’s wife, lived with a convicted killer who has expressed a deep dislike for police officers.

Both of these staffers’ histories have previously been reported, but they take on new significance as de Blasio is being heavily criticized for incubating an anti-cop environment which many believe encouraged 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley to shoot and kill two NYPD cops Saturday.

Earlier this year, de Blasio, a Democrat, hired Motley to direct the Brooklyn office of the community affairs unit, even though last year she was found to have made anti-cop statements on social media.

The New York Post reported in March 2013 and again this year on Motley’s offensive Twitter comments.

“NYPD fatally shoot knife-wielding man in Times Square. (VIDEO) F–k. The. Police,” Motley wrote on Aug. 11, 2012, of the police shooting death of Darrius Kennedy, The Post reported.

Motley’s postings were discovered after the de Blasio mayoral campaign hired her on as a regional field director in March, 2013.

Motley also supported Chris Dorner, the ex-LAPD cop who killed four people, including three police officers, in a shooting rampage in California in Feb. 2013. Dorner had claimed he was fired from the police force due to racism.

“There’s a part of me rooting for #Dorner. This racist, imperialist country gets the best of people sometimes. It makes some snap. #lapd,” Motley tweeted after Dorner went on his spree but before he ultimately killed himself at the end of a statewide manhunt.

The New York City group that called for “dead cops” in a widely circulated video is most likely– no joke — the Trayvon Martin Organizing Committee (TMOC).

In a piece outing “The Monsters Who Screamed For Dead Cops,” The Daily Beast’s Jacob Siegel cites a “web of circumstantial ties” to the group. The man who shot the disturbing video — showing marchers chanting, “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want them? Now!” — told Siegel that he saw the group marching with signs reading “No Cops, No Prison.”

Siegel produces evidence from Instagram that the TMOC marched with that sign at rallies. Likewise, he notes that a slogan being yelled at the beginning of the video, “Arms up, shoot back,” also appears on the TMOC Twitter account.

Yesterday, I critiqued an article in The New Republic by Claire Groden which argued the anti-police protesters weren’t to blame for the murders of two NYPD officers last weekend and that the responsibility was that of the gunman alone.

Today, The New Republic is singing a different tune. According to an article written by Rebecca Leber, it’s the NRA’s fault that the two officers are dead:

The last year when Ismaaiyl Brinsley—the man who killed two New York City cops on Saturday—should have been able to buy or carry a gun was 2008, when he was convicted of felony shoplifting, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In 2011, he pleaded guilty to more felonies after he shot a woman’s car with a stolen handgun. Over his life, he had 19 arrestsin Ohio and Georgia.

As a felon, Brinsley was barred under federal law from buying a gun. Had he undergone a background check, he would have failed it and authorities could be notified. Yet the National Rifle Association argues that bad guys will get their hands on guns regardless of the law. The lobby points to violence in states with strong gun laws as evidence of gun control’s ineffectiveness
