He didn’t know where he was or what day it was. All he could hear around him was a constant annoying beeping every 20 seconds or so. He could dimly see shadows and figures through veiled vision. People were talking to him but the voices were not familiar. His arms felt as heavy as two lead weights. Where was he at? Who in the world did these people keep calling Dr. Bradford? Wake up Dr Bradford wake up they continually chimed out of their mouths.
Who was Dr. Bradford and why were they saying it to him? Through a whisper he managed to ask ,”where am I?” I am at Mass General in Boston. What am I doing here?” I am doctor here in cardiac surgery and aprt time teacher at Harvard Medical. Were these people crazy he could not remember any of this. Slowly through his sore throat he asked Why am I at Mass General? There was accident and that is how I ended up here. He didn’t know what to say. An accident when did this accident occur? You mean to tell me this accident occurred on December the 18th. How long have I been here?”
Then his mind seemed to freeze as he heard a little over a year. A year of my life in the hospital this must have been one bad accident. “Tell me what happened exactly?” “I want to know the details? He was finding it hard to concentrate and hang on their words. What he was able to figure out was that he had been in a car wreck with woman named Elizabeth and they had daughter named Shannon. He had apparently hit a patch of ice coming home from a Christmas party in Marblehead. Why wasn’t this making sense to him? Who were Elizabeth and Shannon? Elizabeth was killed in the accident after the Alpha Romeo had turned over and rolled down the enbankment.
Shannon was in her first year of med school at UCLA. This was all one giant nightmare and like a puzzle with several pieces missing. Where did he fit in exactly? So he had been admitted here and had been in a coma in the ICU for over a year. He felt hard tugging and then felt shapr pain in his crotch area. All he heard is someone say that was nasty looking Cather. Why couldn’t he open his eyes and see these figures. It was like looking through a dark mirror and seeing yourself as a dark shadow.
“So you are telling me that my eyesight might never get better? That there was severe damage to my rods and cones.” Someone calling himself Dr. Jeffrey Baker told him he lived at 2111 Beacon Hill. That he was his best friend at the Mass and they had been for good friends for over twenty years. This was all nonsense to him. He told him not to worry that he had over 4 million dollars in four differnt banks. At least he wouldn't have to worry about money for the rest of his life. His home was completely paid off. All they wanted him to do was concentrate on healing and getting back his memory. The next several days were not easy for him. They talked to him about brail and said he would take classes for the blind. One thing he did know was that he felt independent and didn’t want to be a cripple. He started listening to books on tape that they had brought for him.
He could listen to the televison but could only make out clouded figures on it. When he had to go the bathroom they rigged up a line to help him find his way. He was able to do most things but he still felt he would need care for the rest of his life. The day when he finally left the hospital had been very strange. He knew he was being rolled in wheelchair. The icy air bit against his skin as the chair came to a stop. The next thing he knew he was in a cab being driven home.
He just sat there and listened to the howls of the traffic as they rode along. Finally he heard a voice say 2111 Beacaon Hill. The driver had told him the fare was covered and he would help him to the front door. He could not even remember his own home. When he reached the front stoop he could smell something good floating in the air. Then a strange voice calling herself Miss Cranston his live-in nurse said welcome home Dr. Bradford. He politely said thank you. She put him in another wheel chair and rolled him near what he was sure was a fireplace. His senses were now very aware and he could feel the heat and snapping of the flames.
That night he layed in his bed and tried to remember anyhting but could not. What they hell am I suppose to do for the rest of life if I don’t know who I am? A cripple I am damn cripple. He tried to sleep but it just wouldn’t come. The next several days he just sat and tried to learn the brail from the therapist that was sent from Mass General but his heart was not in it. He listened to more then he cared for books on tape. After several more weeks he felt his strength return and his appetite. He had learned to walk with guide cane and now was familiar with his surroundings.
One afternoon he said to himself I so tired being cramped up here. He thought to himself I need a drink. He got Miss Cranston to help him dress. She chose a blue navy blazer, white crew sweater, and pair of jeans. A pair of Nike running shoes would be best for his traction. She said she would lead him to pub around the corner called the Bull & Finch. She led him to table and told him to call using his new phone one button would call the hosue. A waiter came over and told him they were glad to see him again?” He said again, who do you think I am? You are Dr. Bradford you use to come in here every week. He ordered a scoth and soda with a lemon twist. He about to take the first sip when he heard a voice it was a woman’s voice. The chair on the other side of his table moved and someone sat down. He heard her say Robert it is Meagan how are you? I don’t know you, who are you? “You say you have not seen me for over a year. You miss me and were glad that I was all right. Young lady you have mistaken for someone else? You say you have known me for over five years.” He thought maybe she could help him try to put those pieces together and find out his past.
He could tell she was wearing a most lovely perfume that accentuated her persona. “You want me to leave with you and go back to your apartment.” Against his better judgement he said he would and they left the bar.
