Book Porn

I would love, love, love this for my sewing room and library. That table would be awesome to spread everything out on, and my books right above. The ladder might eventually get annoying, I think I'd install one of those pull down ones.

That's gorgeous.

That's gorgeous. I've always wanted one of those libraries with a rolling ladder, but that ladder will definitiely get in the way.

Talking of bleak you ever read The Nature of Water and Air by Regina McBride? If you like beautiful melon collie Irish style it's worth a bash.

And talking of beautiful Mel and Colic Irishry, am I right in thinking that Cormac McCarthy is originally Irish? ('Brilliant deduction, Holmes!' 'Meretricious.')

Newly built office library

My office/library was finished earlier this month. Now I just need to find a good desk. Suggestions welcome on that front.

Here it is:

that's an interesting library, i'm tryin o imagine what the house looks like from the outside ...

but personally i'd like my books to be more accessible, within arms reach.

That gets at the big question I'm considering now. That pic was taken from the foyer. Just out of site on the right there are two large windows that are nearly floor to ceiling (opposite that is a wall). Trying to decide whether to put the desk by the windows or to move the couch to the window area and put the desk in front of/under the books.

Yesterday I found a Charles Dickens 1st edition in our local charity bookshop.

I do the pricing of their rare and interesting books.

2 volumes of Master Humphrey's Clock 1840/1, bound as one - I priced as £100.

I've checked on abebooks - I probably priced it too high!

The REAL Dickens 1st editions are the weekly parts, not the bound volumes.

The copy of Oliver Twist I have mentioned that.

Oliver Twist began its appearance, as so many of Dickens' novels did, in a serial. Dickens had agreed to assume the editorship of Bentley's Miscellany, and with the magazine's second number - in February 1837 - the installments of OLIVER TWIST commenced. They continued each month (with the exception of June 1837, a gap brought about by the death of his wife's sister, of whom Dickens was very fond) until March of 1839, when the last part was printed.

Since I have hundreds of books, this thread is cool! It reminded me of one of the best Twilight Zone episodes, The Obsolete Man.

Here's the plot from wikipedia:

"In a future totalitarian America, Romney Wordsworth (Burgess Meredith) is a man put on trial for the crime of being obsolete.
His occupation as a librarian is a crime punishable by death as the State has eliminated books and literature".
