Book Porn

More along the lines of a 'horror show' than porn, but, given the subject matter, I thought the following appropriate to post:

ISIS Burns 8000 Rare Books and Manuscripts in Mosul

The former assistant director of the library Qusai All Faraj said that the Mosul Public Library was established in 1921, the same year that saw the birth of the modern Iraq. Among its lost collections were manuscripts from the eighteenth century, Syriac books printed in Iraq's first printing house in the nineteenth century, books from the Ottoman era, Iraqi newspapers from the early twentieth century and some old antiques like an astrolabe and sand glass used by ancient Arabs. The library had hosted the personal libraries of more than 100 notable families from Mosul over the last century.

I care more about the people and livelihoods that ISIS/ISIL destroys, but that's still heartbreaking.

I was leafing through an old classic book at a used Book store last week and a $10 bill floated out, I bought the book.
$1.99, and now I have 3 copies of Homer.

I bought Roddy Doyle's "The Van" and "The Snapper" at the Strand last weekend. Dublin is having their annual "One City; One Book" programme this month, and the selection is Doyle's "Barrytown Trilogy" (the two above plus "The Commitments"). (Which is obviously three books, so I don't know what that means.) When I got home, I found that one book was inscribed by the author. Not bad for five bucks.
...I do love this thread.
Me too.
