Farr Davidson rang the doorbell of the Gonzalez Estate. In his khaki dress pants and brown leather shoes, a white button-down shirt and a sports coat, he looked just the part. He looked just like a prototypical professor. He had always liked the idea of “dressing like a professor”, it masked his extra-curricular activities that much better. Mrs. Gonzalez answered the door, a very nice plastic smile plastered on her face, a pearl necklace complementing her black dress quite nicely. Farr greeted her warmly and stepped inside the ornate foyer, an impressive chandelier hanging above and wide spiral stairs just off to the left behind her. The mansion was abuzz with people standing here and there conversing, the clink and clanks of refined people placing their glasses back on the closest “garcon’s” tray.
“Dr. Davidson, so nice of you to join us!” Mr Gonzalez came up to meet him. “What with your busy academic schedule and your business, I didn’t think you’d drop by. Welcome! Welcome!”
Farr returned the greeting warmly, with a firm hand shake and a dashing smile. It wasn’t for Mr Gonzalez. It was for the chance that any attractive lady in the room might see. It wouldn’t have been the first time he had reeled one in like that.
Mr Gonzalez was right though. Farr was surprised he was able to make it. At relatively young age of thirty-seven he had achieved tenure at the Department of Communications as the University, but not before starting a media consulting company that had done extremely well over the past few years. He had been able to purchase a large property on the far end of town, a multiple bedroom house on rolling hills, secluded from the main road. It suited his needs just perfectly. But despite all his business projects and his academic work, Farr always found time for his true passion. And at five-foot eleven with a slender athletic build, a body that he took care of, brown eyes and shortish salt and pepper (mostly pepper) hair atop a handsome face, he had no problem accomplishing his most desired task.
Once done schmoozing with Mr Gonzalez he went to the bar and requested a drink, turned around and scanned the room. The Gonzalez’s, patrons of the University, had always done a nice job of inviting a number of undergraduate and graduate students. Farr spotted a few in one corner, huddled under the shade of a small potted indoor palm tree. He smiled. The students always seemed to be intimidated by attending such a gathering, and thus stuck together. There was one though, a little ways away from the group under the tree, and she seemed to be talking with some confidence to another party-goer. He wasn’t sure if she was a student or not. But he made a mental note to keep an eye on her.
Farr turned around and sat on one of the stools by the bar, and struck up a conversation with the gentleman to his side. Yes. He had done a good thing coming here tonight. He should have no trouble at all.
