Broaden My Horizons Please... Musically

It's time for an alteration in my musical universe. I'm rebuilding my car stick this weekend. I want upbeat music - nothing maudlin and nothing with a freakin' broken heart.

I am a fan of classic rock, 80s alternative Britpop, some pop (not too bubblegummy), old timey music from the 40s and 50s, jazz, some classic. I'm not a particular fan of harsh sounding music - harder rock, punk etc. For country, it depends.

I don't keep track of the newest and latest so I really don't know all what is out there. I'd love to get some suggestions. I'll take a listen to everything... even if it's not my normal, I'll at least give it a try.

Help?

Tedeschi Trucks Band (blues and blues-inspired rock)

Also try 'Still Corners', a UK group that does SynthPop which is somewhere between soft rock and New Age. Easy to listen to as background while doing other things.

I may have to forgive you for being cranky and demanding. At least give you one get out of free jail card. One. ;)

Good find.

How far did you explore them? I recently picked up a few more tracks and haven't found one yet I don't like. Soft and peaceful, but also a bit edgy.

In the Middle of the Night and I Can't Sleep for example.

I can also suggest 'Pray For Sound', all instrumentals.

And Myrkur. Definitely Myrkur. First albums were black metal with some demon screaming, but later ones are much, much softer. 'Mausoleum' (despite the name) is incredible. 'M' is good too and the latest, 'Folkesange' is hard to describe.

There are certain things I like about it... some of the intensities in the actual music. But the whole love hate thing isn't my bag.

Mmmm...no. Thank you though.

Jazz:
Woody Herman's Herds of the first half of the 1960s are excellent examples of a tight jazz band. Caldonia zooms along at the speed limit. After You've Gone, begins and ends with a solo by the keyboard player on a celest, and then zooms through this lovely song. Good luck to you on your search.

Caledonia reminds me of a musical.

After You've Gone is nice sounding but it's a bit too acidic.

I know you'll hate both of these but they are both amazing live.

Snapcase - Typecast Modulator

MASTODON - "Iron Tusk"

ETA: Make it all 3 of them.

WHORES. - MENTAL ILLNESS AS MATING RITUAL (shout-out to an ex)

You get massive points for perception. :D

Mac Miller - Smile Back R.I.P. Mac :(

"Slick without no lubricant"

I'm kinda surprised. Not sure about it. It's not awful. Which... I mean... well... you and I have some pretty massive musical taste differences. I'm going to think about this one. A white rapper in a tie. I'll give him that.

Matt posted this up the other day... apparently there's now a video to go with it. I've only ever seen it with the album cover before.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xyJvYZQSOXo

I'm not fond of that kind of harsh music. But thank you anyway.

That's video doesn't have the best sound. Even then I don't think it's something I'd really get into.

There's always 'Earth, Wind and Fire'.

Eh, pass.

Purely silly song with a funky beat that probably brings back childhood memories for many:

The House - Air Traffic Controller (Indie Group)

Excerpt of lyrics:

"So much to see and everyone knows.
The band's in the basement putting on a show,
the girls in the living room playing nintendo.
(the house x2)
3+4, come knock on my door
never the same kid you saw before
business out front
the party's back there
I'm talking about my house and not my brother's hair.
We had the house where everybody came.
We had the music we played the games.
And nobody's parents worried about mine,
my mother never left one child behind."

Yeah. Done. I'd completely forgotten about this.

J.I.D - Off Deez ft. J. Cole

Crazy like a movie from that n***a Stanley Kubrick

Yeah we really do have different music tastes. :D

Herbie Hancock, 'Give It All Your Heart'. Funky. Jazzy.

Eh, no. Thanks.

Interesting but not quite my speed. Thank you anyway. :)

portishead - glory box live https://youtu.be/MnMTK8EdsOc

Added.

Tedeschi Trucks Band (blues and blues-inspired rock)

I like their sound. I'll have to look into some specific songs. But I'm getting tired and it will have to wait.

FYI...

the songs I have liked and added to my collection most recently:

Pink - Cover me in sunshine
Eminem - Without Me
Harry Styles - Treat people with kindness

(note to self: left off at 480.)

I have a renewed interest in Joni Mitchell after reading that her unique guitar tunings were the result of weakness in her left hand from polio.

Since you liked Still Corners, they have a couple of new albums out since the post here.

Also, you really should try MYRKUR, - Mausoleum. Not what the title suggests. Nine tracks recorded in a mausoleum for the acoustic effect. Extremely unique, pleasant, peaceful, but haunting.
