We got some pics we would like to burn to a CD. I downloaded picasa today, for some reason they won't let me burn my pics. Now, my question is, im sure there is a certain type of CD im suppose to use, what kind would that be? Today i picked up DVD + RW.... The only other option they had was for music.

A lil help please?

DVDs and CDs are two different things, even though they look the same. A dvd burner can often burn CDs and one or two types of dvds (DVD+ or DVD-). I don't know if DVD RW have a + or - thing going. A CD burner on the other hand can't read or burn DVDs, they're older technology and just don't know how to do it.

The first thing you're going to need to determine is what type of burner you have. Is it a DVD+/-? Can it only burn +s or -s? Is it in fact, only a CD burner? Usually on the front of the burner it'll say something like DVD+/-RW (in the case of DVD burners) or something like 52x32x52 (designating speed) if it's only a CD burner.

If it's a CD burner then you're going to need to get either a CD RW or CD R (I think all newer burners can burn both). RW stands for re-writable, this means you can use it multiple times, whereas a CD R can only be burned once.

If it's a dvd burner you're going to need to find out if it can burn + or - or both types. I don't have a lot of experience with dvd burners (don't have one in my computer), but you'll need a dvd of that type (+ or -).

You're also going to need a program to burn anything. I don't know if picasa can do that but I assume you or someone you know does.

Um that might be a bit confusing, maybe someone else will respond who doesn't have a frazzled brain.

Go online, grab the demo version of Nero and to the store for some CD-R's that run about $10-$20 for a 50-pack. The "music" ones are fine. They're no different than the standard ones except they're held to a different standard during manufacture and more expensive.

If you have another program that came with your computer/drive, use that instead of getting Nero. Once you get Nero/whatever installed, pop the blank CD into the burner drive. You should get a prompt, tell it you want to create a new CD. If not, start your burner program manually via the icon. Wen the program starts, you want to make a "Data" disc or a "File" disc. Then it will give you an interface to add files to the CD. All interfaces are different, but you should generally see a list of what's on the CD, a list of whats on your computer, and a bar telling you how full the CD is. Alternatively, you may need to look for an "Open/Add Files" button. Once everything you want to add to the disc is there, close your other running programs (internet browsers, instant messenger clients, etc) and click "Copy to CD" or "Burn to Disc." Now sit and wait. You should have a brand new disc in 5-30 minutes.

To mark it, I use the medium-point tipped Sharpies. But, assuming this is an archival-type project, you want to get a hold of "CD safe" marking pens. Usually they have them near the CD-Rs. Sharpies do just fine for quick things or music, but over a longer period (years) WILL eat into the CD causing data loss.
