....congrats on the Hebrew final I applaud anyone who can make it through an old language like that !! Rabbonai is about my extent of Hebrew unfortunately.....and I've been going to church all my life. LOL

Adv. Calc....D'OH !!! hehehehe I took my two semesters of Calc and got the flock outta dodge. I could probably dredge up how to do an integration with a few hours of research, but oye !!

Advanced Calc sucks. Basically, you go back and do elaborate proofs of everything you talk about in Calculus. I have difficulties with that one, because it's been so long since I've taken Calc, and most of it I've only done in German. I started out with Calc 3 (Multivariable Calculus) my freshman year, that's about all of it I've done in English. It makes it very difficult.

I'm agnostic It's very interesting to see that everyone in my class is either going to seminary or a at least religion major - except for me. I'm an agnostic math major. Needless to say, I've gotten quite a few "What the heck are you doing there?" from outsiders. Not from my professor, who is luckily awesome, and my classmates are also very sweet and accept the fact that their god does nothing for me and I make merciless fun of the book of Jonah.

It has always been my goal to lear at least one language that has a different alphabet from mine. They weren't offering Greek the semester I needed a filler in my schedule, so that's how I ended up with Hebrew. Greek would have made more sense because of the math connection, but I love Hebrew just the same now.

I've also have quite a few interesting conversations just studying my vocabulary cards in places like an airplane. Everything from people going "So you're learning chinese?" to a guy that was actually from Israel stopping by and refining the definitions on the back of my vocabulary cards.

They hurt when he initially put them on, then the pain went away for a bit, only to return a few seconds later, kind of a tugging sensation that was just too much to ignore and drove me absolutely crazy bit by bit.

I love the Isles, both Ireland and Great Britain. Wales is the only one I haven't been to yet, and I'd really love to go. I've backpacked through Scotland with my sister, which was one of the best vacations ever. I've been to London, and I've one to summer school in Oxford, which was amazing as well. I don't think I've had a single bad experience there.

Yes, it definitely is interesting, especially since we read so many bible texts and see first hand how the addition of the vowels was screwed up in parts. We learned the consonants first, and the vowels after that, which took us quite a bit of time. Distinction is difficult at first, because there is like five conconants that look like a stick, and three different ones that look like a corner, and it takes time to tell them apart.

The reading goes surprisingly fast, I never had a problem getting used to righ-to-left or the fact that you read the vowels under the consonants. Those almost came naturally to the entire class.

Seriously though, the grammar is just fucked up. The main reason is that biblical hebrew is different from modern hebrew, and if there is a case that isn't accounted for in the bible, it basically doesn't exist. There are so many rules and exceptions and exceptions from the exceptions...

On the front of our Hebrew t-shirt it says "Do not fear"

On the back, to symbolize second semester: "You will surely die"

I've always been told that Arabic and Hebrew use syllabaries - symbols for syllables instead of individual letters. Ancient Egyptian is another interesting one thanks to the lack of written vowels.

OE/Anglo-Saxon's fun thanks to the small number of letters (thank you, runic alphabet), though they managed to double up on the "th" sound - two symbols, same sound.

I'd love to hit Scotland and England sometime. Definitely have to get in a pilgrimage to Liverpool (Beatles!!!! and Ozzy!) and the Bodlean library (old manuscripts!). Not to mention my fascination with castles and medieval weaponry, so the British Museum would be high on the list. But, that's gonna be a while.
