hong: feast for 30 people? i hope you remembered to invite the guests!

hmm vic, i guess those would all be good reasons why no one's around. haha and if you bring the video camera, AFM will give you something interesting to film... haha isn't that right?

hi cipher : )))

Deal! What's your address again? AFM, don't forget to shave. ;)

Oh and here's something. Someone forwarded this chain (email) letter to me. I never heard of it but perhaps one of you have.

What do you say, Hong? You're the resident expert.

If anything, it is good advice as it states. :)

===========================================
THE FOLLOWING IS A CHINESE GOOD LUCK TANTRA TOTEM.

You may not believe in this but the advice is great!
===========================================

ONE.
Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

TWO.
Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE.
Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR.
When you say, "I love you," mean it.

FIVE.
When you say, "I'm sorry," look the person in the eye.

SIX.
Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN.
Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT.
Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

NINE.
Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

TEN.
In disagreements, fight fairly. Please No name calling.

ELEVEN.
Don't judge people by their relatives.

TWELVE.
Talk slowly but think quickly.

THIRTEEN.
When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"

FOURTEEN.
Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

FIFTEEN...
Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

SIXTEEN...
When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

SEVENTEEN.
Remember the three R's:
Respect for self;
Respect for others;
Responsibility for all your actions.

EIGHTEEN.
Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

NINETEEN.
When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

TWENTY.
Smile when picking up the phone.
The caller will hear it in your voice.

TWENTY-ONE.
Spend some time alone.

THE FOLLOWING IS A CHINESE GOOD LUCK TANTRA TOTEM.

You gotta be kidding me. First of all what is a "tantra" totem... and what the hell would it have with Chinese good luck sayings... tantra is a hindu/sanscrit term associated with India and then slightly with some elements of Tibetan buddhism...

Second, the sayings are definitely western, modern (smiling over the phone!! #20 yeah real ancient chinese saying here!!!) and may I venture "Oprah Winfrey" in orientation and advice and not Chinese....

In particular I can't believe traditional Chinese would ever write anything like #'s 2,4,6,7, 9, 11, 14, and 21.

my 2 little bits there... sounds like someone was trying to make it sound more exotic...

Well, damn .. How did I miss this thread? Sayin' hi to all the other lit Asians out there..

Cambodian, myself - Any other Cambodians out there?

Hey Hong, nice to 'meet' ya =)

Musician.. Well, I was a professional guitarist a year or so ago, these days, times are somewhat tougher for me, but as someone much wiser than I once said: Great tests are a great gift.

The AV's just a Hallowe'en AV - I'll go back to my regularly scheduled rotating cowboy AVs after this weekend.

Oh, and thanks for the comments on the story. I've pretty much had universally good feedback about it - It was a fun exercise for a brit like me to write it and actually manage to make the narrator sound like your average all-american guy.

Bitter? Sour? Does it smell?

Sorry for the torture, but I'm curious.

I just read this wonderful description of Durian in Sterling Seagrave's book.... "Lords of the Rim"

"The fruit called the durian is an acquired taste. It is huge, the size of a football, with green crocodile skin. Even before it is opened, the fruit gives forth a rich, pungent smell, like overripe limburger cheese, and for a few weeks each year, neighborhoods stink until boys have stripped the fruit from the durian tree's limbs. If you like the smell, you love the taste. Many Thais are connoiseurs. Westerners hold their noses and make rude remarks. If you eat durian, the smell comes out your pores for days, and is difficult to explain. It is illegal to take them aboard a plane."

and it is a heavenly smell ;) sorry AFM.. last post about this fruit of the Gods.....

Good meeting you too Raph... that little "me" link is awfully small... feeling a little shy??

British reticence maybe? yeah I did a quick lurk.

and you could have fooled me in that story.. and although a Yank myself, I am somehow reasured that you aren't like that narrator, cause he was a tad juvenile and crude in a way... sort of like the way the military guy comes across.

Oh, I dunno about shy, Hong. Reserved might be a better word, but I couldn't tell you if that was due to that 'British reticence', or whether it's just due to the fact that I have no real need to 'advertise' myself, as it were.

As for the narrator in the story, he definitely has a less than chivalrous attitude towards women, but he was based pretty much on Ash from the Evil Dead Movies.

I think all I would have needed to round that off would've been to have had him say "Gimme some sugar, baby" .... Hehehe

Spooks and ghosts to everyone in the Asian thread!

Pontianak, aswang, what other kinds of spirits are roaming tonight?
