I awoke to darkness. Complete and utter darkness. This normally wouldn’t be an issue given the fact that I just woke up and I should be in my room…right? The screams I was hearing said otherwise.
Pained cries echoed throughout the area around me. An immediate flash of terror ripped through my body and my heart responded accordingly. It pounded in my ears as my breathing quickened. To my left there were quiet sobs. All around me were the sounds of what sounded like metal scratching against something hard. Where the hell was I? I needed to leave. Now.
My muscles screamed in protest and a soft whimper escaped my lips as I tried to move. I was stopped just as soon as I shifted an inch. Clinking noises resonated loudly when my hands tried to push my body from its current sitting position on a very hard, very cold surface. Realization dawned on me as I held my hands up in front of my face. If only I could see! But sight wasn't needed. I knew exactly what was keeping me in place. Chains. Heavy chains attached to what felt like metal cuffs around my wrists. Unforgiving and tight, the cuffs allowed little movement. My legs were throbbing in pain and my shoulders were wound so tight with tension it was giving me a headache.
Questions and thoughts started racing in my mind about the last place I had been and how I could have gotten here…wherever “here” was. The last memory I had was getting into bed, exhausted after one of the worst days of my life. How fitting to end it with some shit like this. Was this a nightmare? Yes! It had to be.
But why did everything feel so real?
Duh, Adriana. That was what a nightmare was supposed to be like. I had plenty of experience with them before. Nights of sleep cut short from waking up with a beating heart or tears streaming down my face. My imagination and subconscious were pretty strong tools and would often exercise their power while I slept. But even while I was deluding myself into believing this was simply a nightmare, my body wouldn't have it. It was in panic mode. I knew I needed to calm down.
Years ago my brother had signed me up for self defense classes. During one class, the instructor informed us on how to behave if we were ever kidnapped.
“You need to remain calm,” he stated. This made the class laugh with several people asking the same thing - How are we supposed to keep calm if we've been kidnapped? He just nodded his head as if he understood.
“I know it’s hard to think you’d be calm in a situation like that. But you need to try. Instead of focusing on how scared you are, you need to focus on your escape. Focus on details that would help you get away. Remember their face, their voices, and your surroundings. Do you see potential weapons? Do you see landmarks? If you’re in a room, do you see anything with writing on it? Anything guys! Be smart!”
His speech reverberated in my mind. Yeah, I would try to do that…if I could fucking see! All I knew was that I wasn't alone. I was chained. My body shivered and I hugged myself only to realize I was also completely naked.
Oh god. Oh god. This isn’t happening.
Breathe, Adriana. Nightmare or not, I needed to be prepared. While in the process of trying to slow my breathing, a terrified female voice spoke to my left where earlier I had heard crying.
“Please…please help me.”
Squinting hard into the darkness did nothing for me but intensify my headache. She sounded pretty close but even if I tried, I knew I wouldn’t be able to reach far and touch her.
“I-I’m sorry. I can’t move.”
“Neither can I,” she replied before choking on another sob. “Where are we?”
“I don’t know. I’m praying this is a nightmare. Do you remember anything?”
A few minutes passed before she spoke. The others were still screaming.
“I was leaving work and getting into my car…it was dark. I don’t even remember getting home.”
My heart ached for her. It ached for all of us.
I opened my mouth to speak again but was cut short by the loud creaking of a door. Bright, harsh lights flickered on overhead and stung my eyes. More screams broke out.
“You all are the loudest bunch we have ever received here. Knock it off!”
It went silent at the booming male voice that suddenly accompanied us in our prison. I blinked my eyes several times to adjust to the light. That’s when the nightmare became even more real.
Sure enough, I was sitting on concrete, my wrists chained to one of four dull gray concrete walls. I was last in a line of five girls, the one next to me a small little blonde that was trembling with horror. The walls were laden with hooks and steel shelves. Displayed everywhere were instruments that further told me I had to be in hell. Parallel to us was a heavy steel door that opened to a dimly lit hallway that stretched into darkness. A large man dressed in black jeans, a black shirt, and black shitkicker boots was standing in the doorway. His arms were folded, corded muscles straining against his shirt as his eyes studied us. His dark hair was pulled into a ponytail at the nape of his neck. What looked like a whip was coiled neatly and tucked into his belt. There was no kindness in his murky eyes.
Next to him was another man with paler skin and short red hair. He wasn’t as big but he was still just as tall. He, too, wore all black everything, arms folded, mouth a straight and narrow line. His eyes scanned us and seemed to settle on me for a second longer than the others.
Breathe, Adriana.
Even as my heart hammered against my ribs, I defiantly glared back at him. I wouldn’t let them know I was scared. I couldn't let them know.
The corner of his mouth quirked up in the slightest smirk as his gaze traveled lower to linger on my chest. That made my skin crawl and I lost the battle that had barely begun, looking away and shifting my body the best I could to shake the feeling of his stare.
The man with the dark hair started slowing walking around the room.
“My name is Michael. My partner here is Adam.” He inclined his head toward the one with red hair that seemed to still be staring at me.
“First things first. You will refer to both of us as ‘Sir.’ Failure to do so will result in pain. Failure to obey any of the house rules will result in pain.”
One of the girls started crying while the others started in wide eyed disbelief. I took a shaky breath as I listened.
“Do not think of escaping. None of you know where you are and it is to be kept that way. Our house is patrolled morning, noon, and night. Don’t try to be a hero. Don’t try to be smart. The consequences are far beyond what you can imagine."
Don’t try to be smart. He was going against what I had been taught.
“Authority figures are to be addressed as such. Any command they give you is to be followed. Do not speak unless spoken to.”
He stopped in front of the girl next to me. She cringed away from him as he squatted down, grabbing the whip from his belt. The tip of its tail stroked softly against her legs.
“Please don’t,” she begged quietly.
Michael chuckled as if her terror amused him. He swung the whip quickly and it whizzed through the air before coming in contact with her thigh. She cried out in pain and tried harder to contort her body into a ball as if she could escape him. An angry red line appeared instantly across her milky white skin.
“I said do not speak unless spoken to.”
Anger seethed through me. Who the fuck did he think he was? I gritted my teeth to keep from spitting out something I knew I would regret.
He stood and continued his stroll around the room.
“The Master will be here shortly and will continue to explain the rules and your purpose here.”
