I stopped at the car wash after the gym, still wearing my workout shorts, a fitted tank and flip-flops. Nothing special. I was sweaty, my hair was pulled back, and I was mostly thinking about how badly the inside of my car needed vacuumed.
Then I noticed him.
He was a couple stalls down, cleaning out his truck. The first glance could’ve meant nothing. The second one probably could have too.
The third one?
Okay. He was looking.
And lately, apparently, being looked at does something to me.
I started vacuuming the passenger side and caught him looking again. This time I didn’t immediately stand up. I just kept doing what I was doing, completely aware of my bare legs and exactly how much attention I was getting.
That familiar little rush showed up.
Except this time something was different.
Usually I discover someone watching me and then I enjoy it.
Today I wondered if I could make him do it again.
So I took my time.
I moved around to the back seat. Cleaned things that absolutely did not need cleaning. Walked around the car instead of taking the shortest route. I even caught myself checking my reflection in the window before bending back into the car.
What am I doing?
I knew exactly what I was doing.
When I stood back up, I glanced toward him.
Caught.
His eyes immediately went somewhere else.
I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from smiling.
That should have been enough.
It wasn’t.
Now I wanted him to know that I knew.
A few minutes later I walked around the front of my car and glanced over again. He was already watching.
This time I held his eyes.
Just for a second.
Then I gave him the tiniest smile and went right back to vacuuming my car.
My heart was pounding.
Nothing happened. He never approached me. I never spoke to him. To anyone else, I was just some woman cleaning her car after the gym.
But driving home, I couldn’t stop smiling.
Because somewhere between the floor mats and the vacuum hose, I realized I’d crossed another tiny line.
I hadn’t just caught a man looking at me.
I’d tried to make him look.
And it worked.
