Ya know, I hate to be a party pooper on the ninja v samuri debate, but they were the same thing.
the training was very similar for both, and the ninja that attacked you last night was a samuri before dark who put on some black clothing and left his katana behind, taking only a short sword cause it fit better under his cloak.
Ninja were the equilalent of special forces and ineligence agencys today, unconventional warfare assets not to be employed on the battlefield, but to gather inteligence and kill you as you sleep.
You don't put a navy seal platoon in a front line assault, they go in to the enemy camp, plant some explosives, kidnap someone, steal some plans and leave without people (except the dead guards) knowing they were their.
Ninja did the same in the 1400's except they did not have explosives, they likely poisined the rice in the big pot were everyone ate from.
The only possible difference was their were some families who were ninja not of samuri blood, but they still hired out to the samuri and were trained up to the same standards.
Each had the skill they need. A female ninja from a non-samuri clan had very little need to know how to use a spear other than being taught "long pointy weapons 101" but she would likely know how to slip deadly potions into your sake (japanese rice wine) better than a samuri who was taught "general non-violent killing in social settings 101"
Also, shurikin, today thought of a little throwing stars were not the small things in the movies, but big as a salad plate multi-pointed knives that were usualy rusted on purpose so whoever got hit with one looked at it and then said "OH SHIT, now i have tetnus and will die in a horible screaming fit...I better kill myself now"
Honor in ancient japan went something like this:
You and I work for Lord A, therefore I will back you up in battle and you will back me up in battle. However, if I can dishonor you with no fingerprints and have Lord A order you and your family to commit suicide, well, tough shit.
Anyone who works for another lord, we can kill them, steal their shit, basical make their life miserable and destroy them...unless they secretly have a deal with Lord A, in which case we will do that to them until they come out on to ourside in battle at the right signal, then see part #1.
Anyone not samuri, we can kill and face no reprimand. That is our right by being samuri. We have swords, so we rule. However, it the Lord tells us to stop killing people cause we are killing off too many income producing pesants and farmers, we then do what the our lord says.
Anyone not Japanese = lower than whale shit on the ocean floor(except on the boss man's orders)

As for myself, if positions are still open, I'd like the position as a Clan's spymaster. Thats the nondescript looking guy in the grey kimono who everyone thinks is the lord's scribe.
