The one camp is right by our favorite winery in Brunswick County. Her family has property in Sunset Beach.
The rumor is Bird Island is a de-facto nude beach...it used to be. There are too many people that walk to South Carolina now.
O man really, what a coincidence, my wife's family had a house on Sunset Beach for over 35 years. They sold it because it was getting to crowded and they were trying to replace the bridge with a modern one. Lots of great memories on that island.

My wife hates the new bridge. She understands it, but still doesn’t like it.
Her family’s property is on the “mainland”, maybe five minutes from the bridge.
We’ve been going every summer, usually 4th of July week, since 2005. Last year was the first year the beach crowd was different. It was the first year that I noticed younger adults - singles. Eye candy most definitely, but a complete change from the quiet family oriented beach it used to be.
Now, the first year I went with her, we walked down to South Carolina (Bird Island) and we noticed some naked sunbathers. Very few people went down there. Now, a lot of people walk it, and the “de-facto” nude beach is no more.
Sunset and Bird are strictly family beaches. Ocean Isle is only nude beach in the area I know of.

Ever since the “new” bridge went in, there are more people going to Sunset Beach.
In 2009, Brunswick County said they were going to start enforcing it.
Nobody used to care when they’d walk down to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox (and not many people even knew about it, or would care.). Now, it gets promoted by the town, and the sea turtle people are really touchy about the beach down there. Also, a lot more people are walking down to the inlet, which is actually in South Carolina.
It was allowed, or more likely “not seen”, because, one, not many people ventured down there, and two, the area is jurisidictionally murky. Too many technicalities for anyone to police it. However, now, powers that be don’t care, as they’re more worried about some tourist seeing something.
Been years since I've been there, sounds like we sold out just in time.

It’s not BAD in any way, just different. More people and a slightly less laid back vibe.
It’s not quite like my wife feared, but with the bridge, there are more “day visitors” rather than locals or week/month rentals.

I long term vacation in a tropical location. The beaches are not nude per se but I am!
Unless I am going to town I am naked, usually on the beach. There are some long walks where I meet people who are in swim suits. Surprising how many want to stop and chat.
