You make a good point about the ignorance at the heart of this whole issue. But regardless of its original use, the battle flag has long since become a symbol of resistance and backlash against the civil rights movement, as well as outright racism. That is how it is seen today.

Most wars - including that one - had the poor fighting to do the bidding of the rich. That's an outrage all right, but it doesn't change the fact that your ancestors were fighting to destroy the USA and preserve the institution of slavery. Just not for themselves.
