Confused About Lubrication

As the title suggest, I'm confused. I went to the adult book store (which I've never been too) with the intention of buying a new toy (a rabbit vibe) and some high quality lube for my SO and me. I became quickly confused and frustrated by how many types of lube there were and how expensive it was ($35.00 or more for a bottle). Some were labeled water based, some oil based, and others not labeled. Some said they were not compatible with latex (so I assume that means condoms). The toys were priced way out of my price range, so I picked up a couple samples of lube and left. I bought a sample of wet original, moist, and good head strawberry (by doc johnson).

Can someone simplify lubes for me and point me in the right direction? Where is the best place to shop and get the best price? Also, I really want to get the SO a rabbit vibe, so suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i am slightly anebriated right now, so i may not be as elequet as i could be because i know alot about the subject, but this is what i can offer you now, mabye more later...

look at what base the lubrication is... there is water, oil, and silicone.

i prefer silicone (it is a less common lube, i use erozone i think is what it's called), it does not ruin toys, since many are made of silicone anyway i think (either way, oil based can damage toys), and since it is not water, it doesn't abosorb into the skin. i also believe it doesn't stain as much as the oil based.

you can find more info online... just google it or something... sorry i would normally be of more help on this particular subject. i'm sure others here would know alot too though, since they generally are more experienced than i.

Snowman, this is a great primer on lubes. Don't worry about the brands mentioned, just focus on the facts.

I prefer silicone, too, but you've got your facts confused.

The ONLY thing silicone doesn't work with is SILICONE toys (this includes those that contain silicone, like 'Cyberskin' and the like). It DOES work with latex (including condoms), other rubbers, plastics, metals, and everything else. It's fabulous for vaginal, manual, anal, hand jobs, moisturizing, massages, shaving and a few other things. It's also waterproof; we often bring the bottle into the shower with us. :D

THIS is the best deal I've found on silicone lube, hands down. That bottle will last you at least a year with tons of use, more likely several years. It doesn't go bad, and is cheaper than many water-based lubes - when you factor in how long it'll last, it's almost free.

Oil-based can't be used with latex/rubber, including condoms. A lot of people like them because they're long-lasting, slick and waterproof, but they stain fabric and there's the rubber issue (the rabbit you want is "jelly rubber", so oil-based won't work with it or many other less expensive toys, but silicone lube will give you the same benefits and not harm rabbits and non-silicone toys). Containers that require you to dip your hands into to retrieve lube can harbor bacteria as well.

Water-based are popular because they're cheap, compatible with all toys and clean up easily. We've ditched them in favor of silicone because they don't last long, most contain yeast-infection promoting glycerine and a bunch of chemicals, and there's just no reason to use them when we don't have any silicone toys. The samples you bought today are all water-based lubes, so they're safe for all toys.

As for the rabbit, check out eBay's Mature Audiences section, under Everything Else. It requires a FREE adult verification with a credit card, I think, but it's worth it. I've bought many rabbits (2 for me in 5 years, several for friends), for under $20, including shipping. Look for the Rabbit Pearl, or one of the other ones that takes 3 C batteries - there are multiple advantages to this specific type, and it shouldn't cost you more than $30 total. Amazon.com might have some good deals too, but I've always found reputable sellers on eBay to be best (and you can often grab multiple toys for almost nothing). Anyway, price shop once you've found what you want, but they go under a lot of different brand names and many of them (especially the ones that take AA or AAA batteries) are absolute junk. Rechargeable batteries and a charger will pay off in the long run, too. :)

I got a Rabbit Pearl for around thirty bucks through Adam and Eve.com, and I have seen similar things for even less at Amazon. You should give them a try.

Also I have to say as far as lube goes, I am a big fan of astroglide or KY Liquid, which you can get at just about any drugstore chain here in the US for under ten dollars.

I love my rabbit that hubby bought me! I have used KY with it and hopefully that won't cause a problem - I never even thought about it.

The rabbit is fantastic for me to use alone, and just as great for hubby to use on me. You will love it!

lubes are simple: water based lube works with ANYTHING. original Wet and Moist are water based lubes.

oil based lubes will DESTROY latex toys and condoms. Vaseline, or baby oil is oil based. there's also an ID lube for handjobs that's whipped petroleum jelly basically.

silicon base lubes will DESTROY silicone toys. Wet Platinum is an example of this kind of lube.

oil and silicone lubes are hard to wash off, and most silicone lubes have a second 'cleanup' solution you can buy if you want...soaking in the tub and a few soap ups will work too though.

Funny, I don't find silicone that difficult to clean up - a quick wash with soap and warm water or shower takes care of it for us. If there hasn't been anal play or the sex wasn't messy, we usually just rub any residual lube into our legs because it's so silky and moisturizing.

Perhaps different brands clean up more or less easily? We've always used ID Millenium.

Thanks for all the info. I definately understand the differences now. By the way, I'm ordering the ID Millennium. I'm still looking for the rabbit and going to do some searching on ebay. My SO also wants to get a toy for masterbation to use on me....anyone tried one of the vibrating pocket cyberskin things???

Take a look at the last post in this thread for a good review of a masturbation toy. I may get Hubby one because I like how we can use it together, and even during sex.

Just be advised that most sleeves and fake orifaces are not compatible with your new silicone lube. With a purely silicone sleeve like the Utamaro, you can use oil-based lube, and even pop it in the dishwasher or a pot of boiling water to clean/sterilize. With cyber/superskin, you must used a water-based lube, and cleanup is more difficult (sterilization is impossible). Pure silicone toys require less care and should last longer than cyberskin or jelly rubber.

silicone smell

I dont wish to hijack this thread, but as there is so much discussion on silicone lube & toys........

Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of the gross smell that always accompanies silicone toys? I like the warmth & flexibility but hate the smell.

we just go for the good ole KY Liquid - it works well, cleans up fairly well and has a nice little snap back lid - sometimes i get a bit carried away so there's ends up being a LOT more lube than was perhaps required, and the bottle ends up looking like it has a pistol grip cuz i've been clutching it so hard! :)

we tried the stuff that gets hot. it was fun once. we tried the, oh shoot, whatsit stuff......anyway, expensive, flavored, scented.....and always come back to the tried and true......

regarding the question about the odor of some toys......warm water and few baths with the safesuds seems to help. i've sort of gone pavlov's dog on that smell now tho............cuz i know it means Santa and his Toys are coming!

Thanks cumhungry, I do wash them, just never seems to quite go away. I have a well worn favourite I go back to, had it years & it still smells. Only bothered as I like to lick my juices off after, so the lingering smell kinda spoils it a little. :D
