My mom got a call from my brother early sunday morning. He was in Ireland, on his way to Budapest, and eventually landing in his station in Iraq. We are very greatful to his buddy for loaning him the cell phone to call home and let us know that he is safe.

But this buddy of his is a character, and wanted to talk to mom a bit himself. So mom was teasing the guys about how she makes christmas cookies and will be sending them to my brother, and make sure he shares. When my brother talked to her again, he assured her that he would not only share with his buddy, but with the rest of the troop. She asked him how many he thought she should send and he said 500!

You see, not only do the soilders share with each other, but they also give some to the MPs, who give some to the Iraq police, who give the cookies to the Iraqie children. Relations are not good between the Iraqie police and the Iraqie people, so this is one way the military is trying to help build trust between them.

My mom and I are determined to send as many cookies as we can, and we're calling for all the help we can get. This is going to be a pricey venture, but a very good cause.

I really am proud of my little brother, he's doing what he thinks is the right thing to do, and something he really believes in. If I can support him in any way, I am glad to do it.

Sounds wonderful Wench. I would love to be involved, even if in a minor way.

I will Paypal to you a small donation to be used how you deem fit in relation to Project Cookie. PM for details :rose:

Very nice thing you and your mother are doing for your brother and his fellow soldiers.

This is what Jane and I are involved with:

That is a very cool thing adr. :rose:

I know my brother is in a tight knit group, as I supose a lot of the soldiers are. My bother is very much a giver, so everything we send to him we know he will share with his brothers out there. So we're trying to send things in great bulk, but you know, letters is one thing I didn't think of. I'm very much a gift giver, I think that may be why my first instict is to buy things and send packages, but words of encouragement are often more appriciated.

I will keep this in mind as I'm baking my cookies. :)

They expect you to agree to send 1-2 care pkgs a month and a weekly card or letter. That's really not too much to ask considering how much time I (we) waste a week, as it is. You aren't obligated to send anything from their store and can make up your own care pkg.

It's a good organization.

Would love to send you cookies. Not sure how to go about doing that...

I can provide an address to any one who wishes to send things to me to be added into this massive package we're sending to my brother and his troup, just pm me.

if you want to send cookies, package them in an air tight container before putting them in the shipping box. And cookies that you don't normally expect to be very soft are best, like gingerbread and such.

Okay, thank you. I've got some ideas and will get in touch with you. Are you planning to send this closer to Christmas or what is your time frame?

So far we want to make two shipments. One towards the end of november, and one mid december.

It takes two weeks to get to the troups, so the november one is going to be something of a christmas package, and we're hoping the later one will get there by christmas, but we expect it to be more of a new years thing.

to make it for the first shipping, I'm asking packages/donations/what have you make it to me by thanksgiving. That way mom and I have time to collect, sort, and package everything properly. The gov is very picky about packages.

wenchie would you please PM me an address where I can send a donation?

There's a local dentist office that's collecting halloween candy. They're gonna send it to the troops, who are going to pass it out to the Iraqi children.

Sweet....

Got word today that my brother has arrived at his post safe and sound. his mo will keep him on base mostly so he's relitively safe.

Only a few more days until my vacation, and then I'll be baking up a storm to try to get a jump start on the 500 he's requested. I've decided to do pressed cookies. they're quick, easy, and I think they'll keep pretty well.

Thank you to every one who has donated already, or has expressed an interest in donating. I really wasn't expecting such a responce, and was primarily looking for emotional suport, but you guys...well you're just awesome.

that's really cool gracie. :)

I would love to be involved with something like this..

a while ago.. Ihad a friend over there..but they werent "technically" there..so I couldnt send care packages.... more information would lovely

Just some things to keep in mind that I have learned from sending my husband things while he was deployed--

It is better to ship more smaller boxes than one big box. The post office boxes that are one set price no matter how heavy it is are the best! Smaller boxes are easier for the military member to carry. ALso I have found that bigger boxes would seem to take longer to get there. Really small boxes weren't the best either, they got lost.

Absolutely make sure any edibles are in sealed packages. My husband once got a box of cookie crumbs and thousands of ants because his aunt didn't wrap it tightly.

I'll think of more tips..

I thought so. I love what you all are doing, but I'm going to support this group. Similar idea, giving sweets to share and all. Quite frankly, no matter where you are, if you just look a little you'll find lots of ways to continue your support of our troops.

Also, if you'd like I can PM you the image code for my 'support your troops' ribbon in the bottom of my sig line.

Thanks gracie, that would be super cool!

and my mom likes the idea of having it too :)

Well Project Cookie is well underway.

Mom baked 150 cookies yesterday, me, I was passed out most of the day. Combination of working an overnight shift and being sick the past two weeks made for another day in bed. I actually only woke up twice, once at noon for food, and once around 6 to answer the phone.

But it turns out he's not at his fort yet. My sister in law is a total ditz. She's talked to him 5 times now, for an hour each time, and she still can't tell us where he is or why he's not at the fort he's suposed to be posted at. And no it's not a millitary thing, she's just that ditzy. We are trying to figure out if he hasn't told her exactly, or if she hasn't picked up on things his "not telling" her. But then if he told her "this is where I'm at right now, this is why, and this is how long I'll be here" she still wouldn't be able to tell us what he said.

Wenchie, I love what you and your mom are doing with Project Cookie!! I don't have much money to give, but I would like to send what I can for you and your mom to use to buy ingredients for the cookies or to use towards the shipping costs. If you PM me your address, I can put a check in the mail to you tomorrow. Good luck with all the baking!! :)

Tentatively planning on cookie-ing.... Wenchie, can I have an addy to mail them to?

This is a grand idea! Will you PM me with details so I can paypal you a donation?

PMs sent. :)

thank you guys so much. I'm buying my baking suplies today while I'm out. A friend from work gave me a ton of plastic containers to use. I'm really excited to get started baking. I love the smell it leaves in the apt. :)

Really, it has just been amazing the responce from people. Everyone I talk to has reached out in some way and it's just...wow.. *giggles*

Mom and I have a box of 12 rubbermade containers, and almost have the containers full! We're also putting in some personal things for him, slim jims, a ton of q-tips, and huge bottles of hotsause. I think he'll really be amazed by the responce this project is getting.

We're also taking pictures of all the ribbons being hung in honor of him, and making a great big poster for him to put in his trailer there. That is going to probably be his best christmas gift this year.

But really, I just can't imagine the faces of these children recieving these cookies. It's funny what little things we can do to build trust, and what things we do to loose that trust.

baby bro, I really am proud of you, and tho we never have had the type of relationship where we could talk freely between each other, I love you, and I hope you know that. :rose:
