Dave Patterson was tired. He had just walked into the office, poured himself a cup of designer coffee and sat down at his desk. Tired already and he just got there. Tired of the long, frustrating days at the office and tired of the incessant, unachievable performance mandates coming down from corporate. *He was the VP of a large aerospace engineering firm and was successful by any measure. And he made exceptionally good money. But money was no longer enough. His job had become drudgery and he was no longer having fun. If things didn't improve soon, he would start working on an exit plan and move on.*
He sat at his desk staring at the list of emails already waiting. Staring at one in particular. From corporate HR. What now? he thought. What could they possibly want now? More layoffs to trims overhead? He stared at his screen, took a deep breath and clicked 'open'. It was from HR but it was not about layoffs. No, this missive was about hiring. A mandate to hire interns to be precise. Interns that cost less and didn't need benefits. That's just great he thought. As if many on his staff were not already incompetent enough, he was going to be burdened with a stable of snot nosed, know it all, ignorant, lazy self entitled interns. *The more he read, the more angry he got. But it just kept getting worse. As if the mandate itself were not insult enough, they had already decided who is first intern would be. The daughter of a friend of a VP from the corporate office. Not just snot nosed and entitled. But protected too! And the last straw? She would be stopping by to 'interview' later this morning. Interview? That's a laugh. More like coming in to fill out the paperwork for a job as much as guaranteed. Dave *closed his email and pushed back from his desk. This was going to be a long day indeed. ,
The longer he thought it about it, the more frustrated he got. He swung from being pissed to resigned about it and then back to being pissed again, he had just about reached his limit. Dave stood and walked over to the floor to ceiling window of his office looking out over the front grounds and visitors parking lot. He was trying to take in the nice view and relax a bit when he saw the shiny new BMW come whizzing into the parking lot. As soon as she stepped out, Dave knew she must be the new intern. She was young and very well dressed. Short with a nice black suit, white blouse, short black skirt and black heels. She had long, darks hair and carried herself with confidence. That's just great he thought. As she disappeared into the building, Dave thought about how he would handle her and the 'interview'. He decided to close his door and make her wait once she arrived. Good idea to set the tone right away and let her know who the boss was here. Who worked for who. He hadn't even met her but decided she needed to be put in her place front the get go.
