Defying the "tradition" of rape in Ethiopia

I think the major issue here is traditions. Here, sex is done like neathanderals, where you have to force the woman into sex. The guys probably don't know that you can woo a woman and sadly the girls don't know it either. But I guess the guys prefer a dry pussy over a wet one. A dry one most likely feels like a dry hand pumping the cock. They most likely think - probably very dangerous due to sanitation and all - that to spit on their hand would be very disgusting.

I don't think it's about sex at all. Rape is a means of humiliating a woman; to acquire a wife that way would guarantee that she knows her place from the beginning. That it's typically done in the company of friends or brothers, as it says in the article, makes it clear to her that this is done with the approval of the "community." What stronger signal could a society give to its young women that they are no better than cattle? It's a means of social control. If he just wanted a certain type of sex, he could save a few pennies and hire a prostitute, without the risk of being jailed.

There's a great lot of derring-do of that kind pending, I'm afraid.

It's very difficult to affect even the cases in your own ken, let alone far-flung and gigantic injustices. I try to make things better wherever I go. That's all I can hope to do. And I tilt at windmills a lot trying to do that.

:(

You make a bigger difference than you can know. You have contact with people whose attitudes are influenced, even without their knowing it. Windmill tilters change the world, bit by bit, cantdog. (Not only that, you keep the windmills from becoming overly aggressive.)

;)

Thank you.

Hmm. Thanks for the hug, but I'm not very proud of that moment. My instinct was not to help her, but to shoot people, hurt the ones who hurt her. That would, in the long run, amount to sod all.

Your instinct was to object to an injustice. How you respond is a choice. Having the right instincts is half the battle, and rarer than you think.

Well, yes, your instincts were perhaps a little misled, but atleast you reacted against the injustice, and once you have that, it's just a matter of directing that anger in the right direction.

What she said.
