Discussion: Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition.

Meztica, damn, right again... You should have compliled a list, Abrax.

And I'm not saying that you're wrong, but good luck finding a group that still plays in 2nd.

If all these editions have done one thing, its splintered our hobby into microcosms... Sadly.

2nd Ed is confusing to me, not as confusing as 4th, but confusing none the less.

Boy, I tell ya, its like the tower of Babel, all over again...

As an aside, I finally came up with the perfect come on line for gamers...

"Come on baby, if you open your portable hole, I'll show you my rod of wonders!"

I hope your happy raven, none of us will be able to forget that as long as we try.

I didn't play 2nd edition outside of boulders gate 2. Further more I refused to by any campign setting books in 3rd edition. So I only have passing knowledge of forgotten relms and eberon, as far as Dragon Lance goes I know it exists and thats all.

I still think 2nd and 1st (I own one first product that confuses the hell out of me) are way more complex then 4th.

In forth my complaints are the mediocre power level and the confusing split of items such as all the evil gods being in the DMG and the good and neutral gods being in the PHB. (Or the lack of Metalic dragons, the placment of gnomes, magic items in the PHB; take your pick there is plenty.)

Actually, Cats, I am really quite pleased to hear that.

Quite pleased indeed.

*picks up the rod that Ravenloft dropped and whips it at him*

Now that your rod is in your hole...

*begins rolling portable hole*

Tut tut, Cats, one day you will, I am sure of it.

Thats cold, Whiteone...

Couldn't resist.... the opportunity was just sitting there...

He made me do it! -->

*rolls nat 1 on Bluff check*

Honest!

I'm enjoying fourth in a lot of ways. They fixed way more than they screwed up. I'll try to keep it breif but specific as to problems with previous editions.

In second edition it was far to easy to get a high AC and the THAC0 system was pretty stupid. Just like in 3rd though once you got your good AC which you probably started with or didn't have you never really got any better. The higher level monsters were like getting into slugging matches because they couldn't miss. This has been rectified with by the new system where your base AC, attack, saving throw and skill check are based on one half of your level.

The problem with this system though is that on skill checks it makes everybody equal after a bit. Infact at tenth level a fighter is as good at sneaking as your average theif.

Third edition had major flaws with the way it worked on pretty much any non-combat skill. A 9th level bard was practically invincible if you played strictly by the rules. Their ranks in diplomacy, bluff and knowledge (which granted synergy bonuses) got to a point rather easily where any diplomacy check was garunteed to pass and couldn't possibly make things worse. Obviously all of us just said no, but still. It's like the bag o'rats plus whirlind attack plus cleave says dragons die in one round, or spring+chain+combat reflexes. Anyway point is it was easier to break 3rd.

Another major short coming of 2nd was the staggered exp that made the classes very awkard. Say you were like my play group where parties rarely advanced past 7th or 8th level. A bard was a better choice than a Wizard. Period. Because he leveled faster he'd have more and better spells than the wizard, sure the wizard would have enventually caught up when bards slowed around 10th.

My major complaint with 4th at this point is that it feels like everybody is the same. You get enough encounter powers and daily powers that it seems like youre more limited than before. Not to mention I'm rather annoyed that as a fighter I'm doing less damage than the rogues and my primary purpose really is meat sheild. I mark everything so it attacks me and I absorb damage so they can kill shit.

It's easier to get into though and that's good. You're supposed to have magic items now and thus they are in the PHB which is good. The organization of this book is horrendous though.

Shya, and god's an absentee landlord too, right? ;)

 He's absent! No wonder the deva wasn't on my right shoulder... the big man took him with him on vacation...

*hears evil laugh from left shoulder*

Or the little horned guy took advantage of his rival's boss's absence...

*laughter turns maniacal*

Crap...
