There was anxiety that grabbed covid and rode it for a few years. The world was ready for an excuse to shut down and hide under a security blanket.
Biden should probably have never been a candidate for President in 2020.
Hillary should have been the Democratic nominee in 2008, served two terms, and then a more seasoned Barack Obama should have been the Democratic nominee in 2016 and served two term. The Democratic candidate in 2024 probably should / would have been Gabby Giffords, but a right wing maniac ACTUALLY shot her in the head.
Ironically, under the circumstances / as things turned out, President Biden was the right man at the right time, as he served admirably and accomplished much.

I think the shutdowns and the damage they did to the economy helped Biden. I think Trump's poor handling of the riots in the summer of 2020 hurt Trump and thereby helped Biden.
The 2020 riots HELPED Trump, as he was able to use them to promote racist tropes that appealed to certain elements of the electorate.
Sans the 2020 riots, DonOld & the MAGAt republicans would have been CRUSHED.

Trump would have won against Biden without Covid. Biden was bland, boring, and stood for nothing. He couldn't run against Trump because they largely had the same platform.
