Does anyone know what sort of critter this guy is?

A South American Tapir. I think they live near Venz. and Brazilian wetlands.

Good thing I read the rest of the thread... I clicked the link, saw the picture, and was about to reply with "Tapir", but someone's research beat me to it. I'd have looked like an idiot if I'd just posted "It's a Tapir!" after it had already been identified...

You shoulda passed that message along to the rest of the posters, I think someone might have missed the memo.
