Yes, he said a couple of bonehead things. Who hasn't?

I watched Imus back in the day on MSNBC. his was the only program I watched on that network

He was a smart man, a brilliant interviewer, had a soft spot for sick children, honored our veterans, was generous with his money and had kick-ass musicians on his show.

He would play this song, every Feb 3, the anniversary of the plane crash:
