Why didn't the media make a bigger deal about Donald Sterling's racism until now? If it was so well known to so many people, how come I never saw reports of him being a racist until this weekend? Why did it take a leaked phone call to TMZ for it to blow up as a national story?
It says as much about the American media and the failures on their part in making an issue of Sterling's feelings towards black people as it does about the NBA players ostensibly criticizing for not making a bigger issue of it until now. The same thing can be said for the media, why did they have to wait until they had audio of a private conversation to write about his racist views?

Because Sterling is a private citizen with disgusting views on race, whereas Bundy is a private citizen with disgusting views on race who decided to become the public face of the Republican Party for a week by inhaling as many microphones and video cameras as possible.
Why is this so hard to understand for you?

A ban for life sounds like about the harshest thing they could do and they stuck a 2.5 million dollar fine on it which I'm sure is chump change for him, I would have fined him his earnings for the season but anything beyond that would have been insane.

I'm not certain on the "insane" part as I'm hearing that if 3/4ths of owners vote to have him removed, he can be forced to sell his team. Sterling ostensibly agreed to that provision upon purchase of the Clippers or its ratification subsequent to his purchase, so....the NBA and its owners are within their rights to force additional concessions.
The NBA knows how it makes its money and who its star attractions are. Sterling is the easiest to be disposed of.

What is he going to argue, a constitutional right to own an NBA team? He entered into a voluntary association, and agreed to abide by it's by laws. Miles's he can get a court to invalidate those by laws, there isn't much he can do. And I have to think that the NBA has employed some pretty sharp lawyers in putting them together.

Doesn't matter. The second the value of his team starts to decline, he'll sell faster than you can make excuses for him. And, he'll be known as a racist forever.
