Democrat Taylor Rehmet won a special election for the Texas state Senate on Saturday, flipping a reliably Republican district that President Donald Trump won by 17 points in 2024.

The district favored President Trump — who endorsed Wambsganss earlier on Saturday — by 17 points in 2024. The race went to a runoff after none of the candidates were able to clinch a majority in the November election.

Rehmet’s overperformance in the fall stoked concerns for the GOP, and a number of prominent party leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott (R), intervened in the race in an effort to boost Wambsganss.

“When a grassroots union organizer like Taylor Rehmet overperforms by almost 20 points and forces a runoff, it couldn’t be any clearer that voters are tired of Republican bullshit,” Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder said in a statement after the November race.

Getting 57% of the vote is impressive.

This has been VERY big news here in Texas

The demographics of this district are VERY Trump-friendly historically:

• 70% White
• 20% Hispanic
• 5% Black
• 5% Asian (primarily Vietnamese, which have a large concentration there)

Trump did exceptionally well there in 2024, with substantial majorities from White, Asian and Hispanic voters.

Texas Republican leaders are not stupid, they realized in early polling that Hispanics had turned vehemently against Trump due to his xenophobic anti-Hispanic rhetoric and policies, so Republicans did what they do best: suppress the vote.

Their plan was simple: they started a "rumor campaign" on Facebook, NextDoor and other social media indicating that ICE would be at all polling locations to handle any "voting irregularities". The dog-whistling was clear: HIspanics not welcome here!

And............it worked.

The number of voters with Hispanic surnames dwindled down from the expected 20-30% of all votes cast down to less than five percent. Mission accomplished! Heh heh sucks to be you, pandejo!

....which makes the result all the more catestrophic for MAGA: the vast majority of the voting turnout was White (as God intended, naturally) but they voted for the Democrat.

Seems Texans aren't as fond of Trump's fascist vision of America as the rest of the country.

She's also one of the Christian Nationalist types, whose hobbies include lecturing the poor on the evils of premarital fornication and how access to public medical care is technically a "sin". She prays that Muslims, Jews and atheists will all find Jesus soon because Hell is real, my friends.
